Took a trip up through brenham texas and that area to a small town of 400 or so people called dime box... Its near college station i think.
The field hadent been shreaded yet so the cows havent been all around the pasture, it was raining like crazy but i only found these... I hope in a few months maybe ill go back and find some cubes
I've never found copes before, so im trying to figure out how to ID them specificly do any of these looks like copes? I noticed some have a metalic look to them and some were dark but in bad shape... None blued after picking them they were all the color shown... I didnt keep them for that long to test if they blued but i didnt see any rapid blueing... Some might have darkend a little after picking but thats all.
Weather: Warm 80-90's its been raining a lot for the past month or so Habitat: All found in cow crap Spore prints: I didnt take any or keep any of the mushrooms

If you find any that look like that, but turn blue, how have Panaeolus cyanescens!
What is pictured above is the inactive Panaeolus semiovatus.

All of them? Some look a bit diffrent then others. The stems are either white or that reddish brown, and in some places it looks darker, and the caps are either white, or metalic white, or brownish white, or the faded colors. thanks curecat

oh, sorry, didn't look close enough. Yeah, the smaller dark ones with the toothed margin are either P. sphinctrinus or P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum..... It is hard to say which, as it seems that all the currently distinct species of Panaeolus were once synonymous with 2 or 3 other species, and now there are sub-species, and as everyone is confused and outdated, it is hard to get a photo which realistically represents any one species.

Alright thanks! Ive read that for some it takes a while to bruise blue and some its already happend before you pick them... And some bruise blue emediatly, most blueing pictures ive seen on the internet looks black though.
I Guess when i pick the right kind ill know it, Just like i didnt know how a cubensis would bruise blue when handled untill i actually saw it in person:

yeah, that bluing is unmistakeable when you've actually seen it for yourself. It's not like anything else, and it's funny when people new to hunting mistake inactive bruising for bluing, then actually find an active and see it for themselves.

that's awesome.
It's still cool to me. I'll stick a little cube in my pocket, and when I pull it out it's all beat up and blue. I love it.

Some of those look like Panaeolus papilionaceus var. papilionaceus and others look like Panaeolus antillarum. I don't think I can see any Panaeolus semiovatus there.

P. antillarum is outdated, the current nomenclature is P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum.
The problem, is that when you look for images under the currently described P. papilionaceus var. papilionaceus, P. papilionaceus var. parvisporus, P. campanulatus, or P. sphinctrinus, you will find photos of this tiny brown Panaeolus with the jagged margin.... so which species is it? Maybe there are four macroscopically similar species.... It is a hard call.
I did mix up the sub-species of the white mushroom though- what you have is P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum (the Cope look-a-like), rather than P. semiovatus var. semiovatus, which refers to the egg shaped Panaeolus.
..... Okay?

They may also occur in England, however, they also occur in the states: http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Panaeolus_semiovatus.html
I am not positive whether or not they grow in Texas, though I think they do. None the less, I did restate that I did not think he had any of the egg-shaped P. semiovatus in his collection, rather, he has the Cope look-a-like P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum.

Yeah, I said, "they may also occur in england"...?
I cannot find any indication of the species range aside from "North America", and seeing as many dung dwelling Panaeolus appear in Texas, I'd bet P. semiovatus also does.
