horse poo advice (pics)
    #7235971 - 07/29/07 11:36 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

this is day nine since i mixed in chopped brf cakes into aged horse poo, do you think it will colonize on time? i found a small dot the size of a pencil eraser growing on one of the trays 3 days ago when i last checked it, i cut that chunk out and it hasn't reapeared...

Be sure it's moist enough I dunno if it was from you moving the trays, but when the substrate pulls away from the sides it means low moisture.

im just wondering i guess if im on scedule or hopelessly behind and what the odds of getting through with no contams at this point are, i only check them every 3 days, and i am very quick about it, with lots of lysol in the air...

A small chunk of what ?

Your substrate looks very dry . Colonization seems to be moving very slowly , most bulk subs are close to colonized after 9 days . What was your spawn ratio?

sorry, it was a small chunk of green mold. i realize now that i did use not enough spawn, probably half the normal 1 to 5 ratio, but i didn't realize till it was too late, i have all my spawn invested into this first hpoo grow and i was hoping to avoid ordering more syringes and jars and crap and starting over. if i want to get it a bit more moist how would i go about doing it?

Well if the foil bent it's not a sign of lost moisture  In fact if anything (to me) your substrate looks a bit matted.

You won't need to sterilize your water. However, you should never need to spray or dunk before fruiting. Colonization really doesn't take a ton of water.

By the way, a lot of crap appeared since I last loaded this. If it's green mold, get that tray out of your house. The last thing you need is a crapload of trich sporulating into your house.

if it's as dry as it looks you could try dribbling some sterilized water between the myc, just enough to moisten not sodden.
if you cover with cling film with a few micropore taped holes, you will be able to see the how it's progressing, and whether the green has come back, without opening it and possibly spreading unwonted spores about your home.

I agree, if you had green mold throw it out. They say by the time you are able to see it, it is more than likely already spread throught your substrate.

It looks packed down and tight. Next time, leave the substrate loose and airy. I like to add a touch of vermiculite to manure for that purpose as well. A slightly dry substrate will actually colonize faster, so I don't think that's the problem. I make mine dry on purpose, and then dunk before first flush.

i may have actually made it a bit too compact, i patted the surface down a bit to try and make it nice and level for better flushes, but i guess this is working againced me, ill look over the pans really well tomorow when i check them again, but im pretty sure that it was just one dot, and it didn't look like the normal green mold, i had a few cakes die from that, it looked like it was thick, like a lichen or fungus of some sort.

is there anything i can do at this point to try and buy a few more days for the mycelium to spread?

I like to pasteurize my poo in a tub of water (just poo mixed with water) and then let it drain with the lid on. Once its done draining, its still going to have more moisture than you need. Thats when I mix in dry vermiculite until I reach the right consistency, and then the spawn. Also, i've successfully remixed a few tubs that had some, but slow growth due to lack of spawn. It will evenly distribute the myc you already have growing and spread quite a bit faster, also allowing for a not-so-tightly-packed substrate. Beware of contams when doing this though.

Oh, and if you've already found a trich, this will most likely just spread it like wildfire. But as I said, I've done the above successfully several times.

wow thanks djcube, thats exactly the kind of thing i was looking for, ill definatly do that tomorow when i have time to steralize a room and some tools too bad mycelium can't live through pasturazation, or id just pasturieze it again.

I would think you would dunk before you case. It just makes sense lol.
