First Spawn Attempt

Hey Guys,

Could you take a look at this spawn? This is my first attempt at coir/coffee spawn. 5 PF jars were spawned to 90/10 coffee (Ran out) on July 7th. I think I got it too wet resulting in lots of moisture on the top layer. I have noticed a bit of myc piss on the top of the spawn and a bit on the side.

It doesn't look fully colonized compared to what I have seen coir spawn in pictures. I added some additional gas exchange holes today to see if some of the moisture would wick off it. Is there anything else I can do to try and salvage this or is it a lost cause?

I am planning on casing with 50/50 but I don't currently have hydrated lime. Should I wait to get it tomorrow or case it now without?

I've had success with peat+perlite, no lime ... but I think it's worth a day's wait to get the right ingredients.

But like I said, I'd had success without it. Also without any casing layer at all. But you'll get bigger, better fruits with. I just like to try different things for myself.

yea dude i wouldent even wait to put that in the fc after casing, case and throw it in the same day, also use something to cover the sides so you dont have side pinning.

I think you need to wait a few days for the myc to colonize the casing before moving to fruiting conditions. That's what Stamets says, anyway. But hey- try it and see!

Hey Guys,

I went ahead and cased this spawn run. I didn't have lime to add so all my casing consists of is 50verm/50peat. I am worried about the casing layer contaminating. Is there anyway to make it less acidic at this point to prevent contams? The spawn run has already started pinning and looks quite well. Should I just leave this one as is and do it properly the next time?

If it's pinning, don't mess with it, is my advice.

You'll probably get a little mold, don't be surprised.

This was 50/50 without lime. Waiting for my second flush, no sign of comtams.

Think I read FAE is your best weapon against contams. So try regular fanning.
