Will my setup work?
    #723494 - 07/04/02 08:12 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I just wanted you expert shroomers opinions on my setup. I'm going to use a rubbermaid tub (the usual size, ten gallon I think) perlite at the bottom, about an inch thick layer or so. Then use the pf tek with either Equadors or Golden Teacher. I'll keep it around 82 for colonization and about 74 for fruiting. I'll fan 3 or so times a day. My question is, will the perlite take care of the humidity factor, will this system work, I'll have a whole cut in the lid with double think saran wrap on both sides.

Hey Danelectro (like the pedals?),
that sounds like a nice start. a couple of suggestions though:
*to help keep the humidity up you may want to spray the sides of the chamber. (not soaked but a few spritzes goes a long way)
*I love EQ's personally, Quick colonizer, potent, just be careful that you don't wait TOO LONG to birth. lot's of TEK's say "a week" or "5 days" but they also say "for growing P. Cubensis" and there are some many strains. They all have quirks all their own, as all organisms do. Trust your instinct, a little common sense goes a long way. if it looks full colonized, give it a day and birth it. if you wait too long it will start fading on you. (trying to grow without room or proper conditions)
*Remember to really try for sterility, (Lysol in the air, bag on the hair, and a clean set of paws should do the trick.) but remember that this organism has been surviving on it's own in highly unsterile conditions (i.e. poo in a pasture) for millions of years unassisted.
*HAVE FUN! if anything else this will be a learning experience. If it doesn't go your way the first time, as long as you don't lose the lesson, you've grown and are now much more experienced than you were to start off with.
try to add to your setup a little here and there as you grow into a mycologist, it's almost as rewarding to see something you've built yourself working efficiently as it is to harvest it's fruits.
*read everything you can about growing. who knows you may be the next fanaticus in the making.
*ASK DUMB QUESTIONS!!!!!!! and try to ignore the mal-adaptives and morons that will give you a hard time. we all go through it. you would be surprised how many people don't know fundimental concepts about growing just because they never asked "why does my cake look blue?" or "what's taking my pins so long to form" *raising hand* i'm guilty of that one.
any how.....

it never ceases to amaze me how so many people use blue or green colored rubbermaids with some hoakey means of letting light in. lots of fking around. spend a few bucks more and get the semitranslucent kind. no holes, no screwing around ,very low cost. everything else sounds ok

most people use the green and blue ones with a modified lid so that every thing will grow upwards towords the light. also if some one is stoping over or going to be looking around the house (land lord/ family whatever) then you can easily switch the top and put in a closet and no one suspects a thing. asumeing of course you don;t have tubes and wires running in to it

I found translucent containers (lid too) made by Iris at a local housewares shop.

A search on the web found the same containers for sale online here

the clear-ish tubs made by rubbermaid, that come with a white plastic lid, are the ones i refer to. the light doesn't need to get in through the lid, since it can get in through the sides, but if you needed it to, sufficient light would certainly make it through the lid alone.
