horse poo tek pictorial 10

Its been awhile since I have posted anything. So I thought I?d do a start to finnish pictorial of the horse poo tek so you could follow along.
First thing you want is dried out horse poo. If you can only get fresh horse poo....dry it out yourself! I dry mine out on a tarp like this....if its too wet.
Then you want to load what ever amount your gonna need into a pillow case. I usually do 4 pans worth at a time.....fits in the large pot real nice....is why.
Hopefully you will have a large pot like this.
I use a divot in the bottom of the pot....you should get one or a towel for the bottom of the pot.....the pillow case might burn on the bottom of the pot.
Tie off the pillow case.....Put it in a big ass pot.
put purified or mineral water in the pot....tap water is fine if you have good quality tap water. Get a weight to hold the pillow case down....I use a 25 pound weight lifting weight. get a candy thermometer.....you?ll need one....most grocery stores have it.
turn the stove on and get it up to 160 to 175 degrees. make sure by checking the candy thermometer.
this is called pasturizing. ....don?t go over 175 degrees. do this for 30 to 40 minutes. after you are done.....let it cool down. then ring the pillow case out into the pot. after some good ringing out.....throw the pillow case into the sink to drain. If you wait just a few hours to continue....make sure that the poo is cool...after it is cool.....proceed. I leave the pillow case in the sink over night now....seems to work better! Now that the pillow case is done draining...open it up and check it. It should be moist.....not runny.....hand squeeze it out if you have to. you can wash your hands later if you don?t like icky stuff....doesn?t bother me. Get some large alum Bread pans from the store.....they are like 2 for $1.79. Fill the bread pan with 3" to 4" of the poo.
**note ***** I have switched to using large black plastic pans.....since the Alum pans don?t hold up well....they get holes in them from a chemical reaction. *****
Alum pan with horse poo.
Now get your BRF jars or other substrate.
Take a PF cake and put it in a food processor...and hit the start button a few times. break the cake or cakes up into little peices....don?t over do it...or you will get putty.
I?m using 2 cakes per casing....spawn ratio can be 10 to1.....but more substrate = faster colonization.
Mini food processor....works great!
Broken up cake in food processor.
make sure you don?t make putty!!!
Dump the broken up cake or cakes into the horse poo.
*** You will get thousands of inoculation points to the poo by using a food processor....cause the substrate will be well broken up and spread out more ***
If you don't have a food processor..... break the cake up by hand or use a cheese grater.
but if you break the cakes up by hand...make sure that they are broken up really small. Then spawn the cake into the poo that is in the bread pan.....mix it up really good.
Mixed up BRF cake in poo!
If you want.....you can spawn with Grain, Birseed....etc. Doesn?t have to be a BRF cake.
Here is some Rye Grain
I just take a long Ice Tea spoon and sterilize it and spoon the grain out onto the poo.
Then you mix it all up really good!!!
Grain mixed into the poo! I used 1 quart per casing.
Cover up the pan with Alum foil after you have mixed in the substrate with the poo. Take a fork and punch little holes in several places.....like 9 places in the Alum foil though out the top.
Alum foil over pan with holes punched in from a fork.
Your gonna need an incubator.
Stick your casings in the incubator.
.....and you should see growth in a day or 2. Now you sit back and wait for the horse poo to fully colonize.
***Update July 7th, 2002*** Casings are colonizing really nice.
Puerto Rican update 7-7-02.... some nice growth.
Keepers Creeper Casing #1 update 7-7-02....some nice growth.
Keepers Creeper Casing #2 update 7-7-02....some nice growth.
Keepers Creeper Casing #3 update 7-7-02....some nice growth.
Keepers Creeper Casing #4 update 7-7-02....this one seems to be slower.
***Update July 9th, 2002*** Casings are colonizing really nice.
Puerto Rican update 7-9-02....looking good!
Keepers Creeper Casing #1 update 7-9-02....looking good!
Keepers Creeper Casing #2 update 7-9-02....looking good!
Keepers Creeper Casing #3 update 7-9-02....looking good!
Keepers Creeper Casing #3 update 7-9-02.... Still behind the others!
***Update July 12th, 2002*** Casings are colonizing really nice.....will put them in the fruiting chamber tomorrow morning.
Puerto Rican update 7-12-02....Ready to fruit!
Keepers Creeper Casing #1 update 7-12-02....Ready to fruit!
Keepers Creeper Casing #2 update 7-12-02....Ready to fruit!
Keepers Creeper Casing #3 update 7-12-02....Ready to fruit!
Keepers Creeper Casing #4 update 7-12-02....Not ready yet....couple more days.
After you get the whole pan of poo colonized you can case it with a Coco Coir casing or any casing layer you want.....or you can let it fruit in the fruiting chamber without a casing layer..... a casing layer can be better!
You would leave the container in the incubator if you put a top casing layer on. Be careful with PR, Keepers Creeper, South American, F+...aka Floriduh White and any fast colonizing strains....if you leave them in the incubator too long with a casing layer on they will overlay.
I?d like to thank Anno for allowing me to upload this all up in one giant swoop.....for your viewing pleasure.
The BRF cakes are Puerto Rican......that was spawned into the horse poo....2 cakes were used for the casing. The Rye Grain is Keepers Creeper.....there are 4 casings of this.....1 quart of Rye grain was used for each casing.
I will be adding pictures here and there to make this a more visual experience. I?ll add more pictures of the horse poo being pasturized and such. So look up here as I will be editing and adding to this post.....not down below in another post.
I will also be adding pictures as the horse poo is colonizing....so look up above.
enjoy!

Hey there,
I was looking at you PR cakes still in the jars and then broken up in the blender. How white should the inside substate get compared to the nice layer of white mycelium on the outside of the PR cakes? Is what I see in the B&D chopper about average? I opened up a PF classic jar yesterday to basically do what you did with your PR cakes and it did not look quite as colonized as yours but I did not know what to expect. It definitely smelled like mushrooms though...definitely. Those look like rye berries in the larger jars....how long did it take for your to get them to the point show in the pictures. I have some MMGG style that I just dropped EQ on and I was curious to the average time frame.
How long do you expect your spawn to fully overtake the gallop poop medium to the point where you would drop a 50/50+ on it? Once you have the casings on the colonized gallop poop, what happens then? Sorry about the questions but your very interesting presentation stirred up my imagination..nice spawn BTW!!
Best regards,
KiingBolete

Thanks boxtop!
Bolete, The inside of the cake should be solid white......the picture shows pretty much how the inside of a cake should be.
The poo should be completely colonized in 7 days or so....some strains are faster than others.....these 2 strains I have going here are very fast colonizers so we will probably see them colonize faster than 7 days.
Guess we will wait and see! I'll take pictures late tomorrow night.....at the 48 hour mark.
thanks Bolete!

Good Poo, smooth hand, nice style = Great Log.
You must have a tough constitution. The smell of poo being wet pasturized gags a Raccoon I know. But, ya have to do -- what -- you have to do to get great results.

A friend has tried this tek several times spawning pasturized horse poo with colonized rye grain and each time the tray looks like the 15th picture in your post, but a few days after the grains fluff up a bit and don't do anything from there. It seems like the mycelium doesn't want to go from the grain into the dung. Any help with this would be much appriciated.
Thanks for writing this grow log, I really like it and I look forward to the future pics.

In reply to:
Cakes in a blender....looks like a trick learned from ol' Pavlovs Dog....?
Yes....I learned this tek from Pav.....we are friends in real life. He taught Pleezr, KoOs and I.... this tek at his house! I asked Pav if I could us his tek to help people learn this wonderful way of growing.....he was all for it.
Pav got the blender idea from Oldtimer.....if I remember correct.
The whole idea of this was to help people see the benifits of using bulk substrates!
Unfortunatly Pav is no longer online..... he doesn't have a internet connection.... and is having some personal problems.
***For Everyone else*** I fell asleep early last night.....and didn't get pictures up of the poo colonizing. I went and check them today at 11:30 am PST. They are really colonizing fast!!!! I will post pictures tonight......I have a BBQ to go to this afternoon.
And thanks for all the kind words!
Josh, I had a wonderful 4th.....thanks bro! Hope you had a nice 4th too. I recieved the syringes this morning.....thank you!
bbl (be back later) this evening to post the updated pictures!

As an amendment to Pav's blender tek...
PF style cakes don't even have to be fully colonized when you throw them in the blender! amazing....
I took 4 80% colonized cakes and blended em, poured into a cake pan and it was a solid block within 5 days... WOOT!
I suspect that there is an elevated risk of contams with this method, however I have seen none as of yet.
Cheers,
Hammy.

I have had the same problem with dung that has not drained long enough. If the dung is too wet it will be a barrier to colonisation. I try to drain it overnight. I put my pillowcase in the oven to drain. I fill the oven w/ Lysol mist and then close it in and forget about it 'till the next day.

Roadkill... what do you plan on casing with? Because i'm using the poo tek i got from you and i'm at pretty much the same point you are. I have 5 of the smaller bread pan tins filled. I think 2 of them are ready to be cased right now. I was thinking of using a peat/vermiculite mix with lime for pH. what do you think? and as far as a fruting chamber, would a rubbermaid with wet perlite on bottom, 3 fannings/day with misting each time be alright? and for a growing chamber, is a rubbermaid with a bubbler and a container of wet perlite with a couple fannings per day good? i'm also curious as to what your yeilds usually are per container.

I'm going to definately have to try this tek for my first bulk substrate experience. Up until now I just put a bottom layer of vermiculite, several caked crumpled up on top of that and then case with coir. I'm enjoying this natural progression I'm having with growing. I started birthing just the cakes, then moved on to casing, and now it's time to try bulk. Thanks for the tek and great pics.

Hairs:
Ive noticed that with compost or manure it will actually colonize faster in 70-75 degree weather rather than an incubator setup at 80-85F. Temps that are reached inside the compost are pretty much perfect when the ambient temperature is in the 70s.
Just make sure you cover with foil and put it in a dark place

Pavlovs Dog used to keep his in the cubbard up above his frig.
If you do this be sure and clean it out really good...spray some Lysol in there...and cover the casing up without using holes in the Alum foil.
I prefer the incubator.....much faster! My casing incubator is set at 80 degrees inside temp.

are you sure it was mycelium?
horse poo turns white when dried.
I don't think it will be a problem.
As far as getting it wet after being dry.....I'd think it would be fine.
reason you want it to dry out to begin with is to get rid of the amonia < SP.
If your not in a rush you might dry it out again.
Just pasturize it when you are ready to use it.

i keep putting off pasturizing my dung, and i have one more question, instead of buying a thermometer could i just stick a pot in the oven at 170 and just do it that way, any problems with this? will the pillowcase start on fira?

Don't be ghetto! Buy a friggin thermometer! They are cheap at Wally World. Just buy a 'candy' thermometer. Theoretically you CAN just put the pot in the oven but your oven thermostat is only good for about +/- 30 degrees so the temp will vary as much as 140-200 degrees...especially at this low temp range. The thermostats work better (+/- 15 deg) up around 250+, more in the operational range of yer oven. If you want to do something right don't take shortcuts. Proper pasteurization is important!...and thermometers are cheap!....wanna do like Road?...follow the directions he has graciously given you and you should succeed.

Hairs, Don't start experimenting.....try it this way. A candy thermometer is only a few dollars. you can get them in almost any major grocery store.

Hi Roadkill, I noticed your comment on the aluminum pans: I started using the same type of loaf pans for casings because they have a good depth, especially the Jumbo size. I also noticed problems with them holding up, the bottoms would sag out and get holes in them! Exactly what type of plastic trays are you using now? I like using a 3-5 inch total depth on my casings but can't find plastic trays that are deep enough... Seedling trays are not deep or strong enough for the job. Let us know what brand or type you use. thanks! This was very informative as well as encouraging.

I'm Real Happy with the growth!
They are ready to be put in the fruiting chamber in the morning. Except KC casing #4....its dragging ass....I'll let it colonize for a few more days.
So basically it took 6 days to colonize the poo. Right on schedule!

Hi Roadkill,
Thanks for replying, I'm sure you are very busy but enjoying having time with your son.
I just got started again after returning from my journey of 3 weeks to China, and I'm looking ahead to get some new things to get before my new set of jars finishes up and has to be cased, so I appreciate the info about the plastic mortar tubs. I can't wait to try them out with the South American's I just started. I have really enjoyed this grow log of yours!
the trays look great

sillvyr,
yw
I hope you enjoyed your trip to China. I was in China in 1982....Hong Kong. My friends and I snuck into main land China and ran around for a few hours. We were in the Military.....so they didn't want us going in....what they didn't know didn't hurt....The Chinese didn't seem to care......looking back now....we were very stupid.....young and dumb and full of cum! lolz
Your gonna love the South Americans. They rip through the horse poo......they also rip through a casing layer. So be careful with the S.A's.
I'm glad your enjoying the poo log! It's been fun making it.

The casing were put into the fruiting chamber this morning.
My simple set up.
The light I?m using is a blue spectrum grow light.
There is nothing used but an air bubbler....and I mist the sides.
My getto aquarium air pump that I took the bottom off and put a micron filter disc over where the bottom was....then you put the rubber bottom on what was the top....and you duct tape it all together....gotta love that duct tape!! I don?t want any contaminated air getting in!!
enjoy!

Roadkill,
Is your aquarium heater completely submerged, or do you leave the top sticking out of the water? Although mine says "submersible," the factory says not to submerse the top of the unit. If you can submerse the entire unit, what's the make and model?

primal,
I use the Tronic submersible aquarium heaters in my incubators. They are fully submersible.....and yes I have them completely submerged under the water. I have been using the same ones now for over 9 months and they are holding up really good....haven't had one break or burn out.....yet *crosses fingers* I have several different inubators.....and the wattage is different for a few of them. The bigger the incubator the bigger the heater your gonna need. The heater in the picture up above is a Tronic 100 watt submersible aquarium heater. I think Tronic makes a 300 watt one. Side note.....they are sorta expensive!
good luck!

the air bubbler provides both humidity and air exchange.
I still fan 2 to 3 times a day.
I mist the fruiting chamber walls down every day.....once.

Hey kracker
Drain the poo eh?? I used to just wait a few hours then squeez the water out untill I felt the moisture content was to my liking. Now one time I had pasturized the dung and set it in my sink. I forgot about it untill the next day, yet it didnt drain near enough to use for spawn!?!
So...you ppl are letting it drain to the proper moisture content??? I have found that not to be possible. Even so, I think the optimum moisture content is best if it is done manually rather than letting it drain.
Also, Road likes to case on the second flush. I personally feel that a casing layer is very necassary. This way one can accually control the pinset. Try both ways and see what works best for you. I could never get a flush like Roads when I didnt apply a casing layer. Works for him but not me...so maybe its me!?!

how tight is the lid on your fruiting chamber? does it matter how tight the lid is? i'm using a bubbler with perlite, and i think the perlite is very unneccessary. 3 of my casings are SOAKED. i think i should take the perlite out.

if you want to hunt around,,,,,for not much more then the penn-plex glass heaters...you can get one made out of metal that is bad ass. i dont remember the exact name of the product, but ill get it tomorrow. it also has an adjustible temp. guage that is on the chord as opposed to on the actuall heater. i worked in a pet store and the sales guy who sold it to the store threw one against the wall and the damn thing still worked. any one who is interested just pm me, and ill try to go ahead and get some info for you guys. or just look out for a post, and ill put all the info in it. right on all

sounds like you got cobweb mold....and a bacterial contam.
I'd have to see a picture though.
You should take the bad casing out .....and get it away from the others.
Try spraying that casing with some H202/water mix....might be able to save it. but.....I doubt it.

I haven't had any cobweb mold in jars......lucky maybe.
From what I have read and seen posted.....I'll guess you got it in the casing. Now how you got it.....is a good question.
I had some left over Coco Coir and didn't pasturize it....it had been sitting around wet for a week....I knew I was taking a chance.....I used it as a casing layer...it got cobweb mold. Lesson learned.
Sorry to hear about your casings going bad!

Great job Road! You really did a nice job with this grow log so far. I can't wait to see your shrooms! Thanks for the spores you sent me from your contest. KOTC I really like the Cambodians, they are still fruiting. I might come down for hempfest.

Awesome news, Roadkill! I've been so impressed with your grow log and it would have been such a shame if things did not turn out.
I noticed that you posted additional pics in your 7/15/02 post. Why don't you keep with your original form and edit your first post to include all additional pics? Having all the pics in one post was one of the things I really appreciated about your grow log. It made it more of a tutorial, rather than breaking things up.
Keep up the good work and post those pics asap!

i just have to say that my friend has just completed his first dung-bulk tek and his test subjects have seen a increase in potentcy from straight brf....he too recommends casing after the first flush...but even if you dont he said they will still flush like mad but the cased ones produced much larger fruits.. they are some of the largest he has grown.....good job roadie, you have made the step up to bulk quite easy and very rewarding....

Yep, Like mad! I myself have acually found a casing layer applied before first flush to be much more benificial. Guess everyone has methods that work best for them.

Where's the pics Road? Several days ago you said you had pins and said you would post pics the next morning ... yet there are no new pics. If something has gone terribly wrong, why don't you be upfront about it, figure out what went wrong, and post/seek suggestions on how to solve the problem, so we can all learn from your experience. If everything is going fine, then post them pics! This log is starting to look like it's going to meet the tragic death of all of the other uncompleted grow logs. For gosh sake man, don't keep us all hanging. I'm losing sleep, I can't get it up anymore, when I do sleep, I'm having dreams of horse poo dancing the tango. I need closure man, please, for the love of god ...

relax......the casings are fine. I have the pictures....I'll post them today. They have all fruited.
My son is with me this summer and its hard for me to keep up with him, posts in the Vendor & Contest forum, helping over 40 people in PM's a day and doing this grow log.
I'll try and keep better updates on the next flush.....but no promises. Real Life can get quite busy.....when you have other responsiblities. Someday when you have kids you will know who comes first.

Update July 30th
Casings now.
I?ll be harvesting all the casings within the next 24 hours. Then applying a Coco Coir casing layer.
I?ve never had the Creeper?s have split caps before.....not really sure why it happened.
And yes I am making prints.

Thanks boxtop.
They didn't get very tall this time. But the caps on the large ones are 3" to 4 1/2" wide.
Yes they drop alot of spores. I'll post some spore print pictures in a few days.

Wow! Those are awsome fruits, the caps look really cool since they split. How come the top of the highest mushroom is black? What mushroom dropped spores on that one?
Again, awsome work road! Fd
