Tao Te Ching
Wen-Tsu
Chuang-Tsu

These men have written some of the greatest philosophical writings ever. I strongly recommend them to anyone who has EVER tripped. They are MY bible!

lao tzu ("the old guy") wrote the tao te ching ("the way and its power") as a bribe to a border guard, as he was leaving his post as imperial librarian for the hinterlands (or so the story goes...)
i sorta like jane english's version (clean prose, lovely photographs (she was a particle physicist; also did a companion volume, _chaung tsu's inner chapters_)...)
there are many translations available (tim leary's _psychedelic prayers_ is based on the tao te ching... up in the himalayas, smoking hash every day & trippin' once a week, poring over a half-dozen translations, grokking the meaning & rendering into psychadeleze poems...)

i know its cliche, but the tao of pooh really helped me grasp some of the applications of belief- i think because it gave me one cornerstone of reference (pooh), i was able to understand it in a more realistic way. well, come to my own understanding, i suppose.
