Anyone ever built a guitar?
    #7223688 - 07/25/07 07:41 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I've been playing bass guitar for a little bit now, and I reckon I'm getting pretty good. After coming to this conclusion, I've decided to scrounge up some money and build my own guitar.

If all goes well, and I can afford it, I'd like it to be a six string.

Has anyone else built one, and is there any advice you can offer me so I don't fuck this up?

i thought a lot about building one a while ago. i realized it wasn't cost effective and bought a Schecter C-1 Classic and haven't looked back once; easily the best guitar i have ever played for the money.

check out warmoth.com they sell individual guitar parts.

if this is just a project, and you have time and money to throw at it, FUCK YES do it, would be so awesome. but, if you are like me and are on a budget and need something that is reliable in tone and construction, just buy one.

Getting into building guitars, is Def an experience. Makes you understand the instrument you play and love so much. I say take you're time. If you ever need any help with anything PM me. My roomate builds guitars for halo guitars.

A decent guitar is hard to make and takes a lot of skill. If you do decide to do it thought I think you should go all out and build a 12 string and play Stairway  :headbang:   :headbanger:

my brother made an amazing guitar out of scrath. Now i dont know anything about guitars but it was cool seeing him make it. I forget what kind of wood and what electronic internals it had, but it sounded great. It was carved like a heavy metal guitar, never got to painting it.

not TOO hard to make if you have general technical know-how and order parts from a place like warmoth. it's all pre-cut, follow directions like legos sort of stuff.

yea my bros guitar was no just pre-cut. he built it from square pieces of wood. It all depends on what you wanna do... Do you wanna get some unbuilt Lego set or do you want to make a hand-built, musical piece of art?

Pre-cut sure, but I thought he wanted to start with a fucking log. If that were the case you would pretty much have to be a carpenter or at least have a few years exp with wood working.

Making a guitar is a very complicated task if you're just starting out. If you're doing it totally from scratch with hunks of wood, I might suggest using a fine pine timber. It may cost a lot, but it will be worth it. my friend made an electric guitar out of huon pine and it is the most insane guitar I have ever played. he said the hardest part was shaping and fitting the neck, then the frets and harmonics accordingly.

I'd say have a look around at some designs and instruction manuals,if you plan on doing it this way, it's not easy... perhaps start out easy with pre cut peices. you've probably already said this, but eh

hey thanks for everyone's responses, I think I might go with pre-cut pieces since i don't have the necessary tools for starting from "a fucking log."  eventually though i hope to build one from scratch.

ovangkol is such a pretty wood, i think i might go with that for the body

p.s. if anyone would like to donate to the "help adam build his guitar" charity, you'll be a better person for it

i'll be a less wealthy person, and unfortunately for you, that weighs heavier on my conscience than being a good person.
