*Shrug* I doubt the dramatic switch between 5% and 2.5% copper platings would make any difference. Full copper pennies haven't been made since pre-civil war days.

lol right?
Well I was only barely correct Orb rightly pointed out that my (lamentably, non-stoned) eyes missed the juxtaposition, and indeed pennies were pretty much all copper prior to '82.
However they're all alloys, to the best of my knowledge, until you get into the 1850s and before.

There is no proving you wrong as:
"1793–1837 copper"
BTW, all this information can be found on wikipedia, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cent_%28United_States_coin%29

BTW, as seen in the diagram, 1943 pennies contained NO copper at all, so don't use those either. Other than that, pre '82 should work fine, but it'd probably be alot easier to just go buy some copper tubing from your local hardware store than it would be to gather/sort a shitload of pennies. For those that don't know, copper will be found in tubing form under "plumbing supply", and in wire form under "electrical supply".

I'd be remiss not to note that during all this inaccuracy was totally the result of my being smarmy by hitting Wikipedia in a cigarette-deprived morning irritation streak. I am merely illiterate.
The "prove me wrong" was a random nod to Skinner, sorry. "We all know these children HAVE no future!"
Edit: I don't need to beat a dead horse by off-topic posting. Orb, that was definitely *not* off the top of my head I looked it up, and did so incorrectly, heh. Figured that deserved a mention

I don't know why you'd use that. I'm not misinterpreting your question or this thread, right? I don't see any mention of slugs except by someone other than you, and you certainly needn't worry if you don't have an active problem. If this is still about the grass, as previously stated, it's beneficial and will help give your mushrooms a humid environment. Growth in your bed may seem like you're harboring competing species, but they'll grow well, even better, like that.
If your outdoor bed is properly spawned and colonized, there's no need for any kind of pesticide, chemical or not. Don't worry about it. If you insist, I'm pretty confident that the diatom filter will be inert...sprinkle away.

Grass, haha. I've had that on some not very serious outdoor stuff (contamn'd WBS jars) and I let it grow, thinking: well I won't get any mushrooms but I've grown some grass! Actually it's rice but looks like grass. I'm using rice straw, which looks like regular straw, and it obviously still has seeds in.
On the subject of slugs, in the same area I threw out a contamn'd cake. It was fun to watch it go from bright white, to green, to dark green, and now a slugs's eating it! During this time some non-active random mushrooms have grown right next to it.
