and outdoor bed does benefit from having something laying over the top of it
some use tarps, some use grass clippings and the such, others use casing mix...
any should work, and your mycelium will enjoy the extra humidity from it you can also go ahead and ptu the casing layer on it if you want outdoor beds are kinda 'set it and forget it' kinda deals, with maybe an occasional watering during hotter months, nature takes care of the specifics for you.

sounds perfect doesnt have to be anything fancy, just somethign to cover the mycelium from the elements dont even bother pasteurizing or anything either, naturally =)

no, you should have left the grass, thats the mushrooms natural habitat, grass acts like a mini humidty dome and creates the perfect micro climate

eh you really only need copper wire, or a shitload of pennies, as slugs are what's going to crawl in. Anything else will fly, and the granular pesticide isn't going to help that. The copper tho, slugs hate it. Do pennies even have copper coatings any more? you're best to get some old copper pipe, or old electrical wire from a condemned house.

so they hate the copper itself? or does it have to be electrified?

I second the comment made above that you should have left the grass growing. Don't pull it any more. It helps. Plants and fungi rarely compete with each other, but often each benefits from the other.
I was having trouble with slugs once and they'd crawl right over a wire, but I got some 1/2" copper tubing from the hardware store and ringed the garden with that, and it kept them out. RR

What about making a barrier of those water softener salt pellets? We all know what salt does to slugs, and I think I remember reading that Cubes are somewhat tollerant to salt (dunno for sure bout that tho)

Salt is toxic to the soil and the beneficial organisms that live in it. It's also bad for mushrooms, and it's bad for plants. Besides, slugs don't eat much. Just grow extra. You can also get up at dawn and go out and pick the individual slugs out of your garden area. It shouldn't take long to make a big dent in their numbers. RR

If you are trying to use pennies, get ones dated 1982 or earlier.

+1
Seriously, don't overlook the obvious, easy methods. Every spring I have to spend a night or two plucking them off the sides of my house and throwing them as far away as possible. By the third night, they're gone for the rest of the season, for the most part.

They must have learned from the experience, and told their slug buddies to keep away from the giant's house. Trainable slugs...who would have guessed?

Either that or their fragile little bodies couldn't take the force of being thrown several yards as hard as I could, before hitting some kind of life-altering obstruction in their flight paths. (ergo, the trees, heh)
