What casing for PF Style Cake (PE Strain)

Im planning on doing a couple of PF style jars with Penis Envy strain. However I cannot decide which casing type to use.

Ive been told coir is good for PE and others have said the compost from high mountain compost is good aswell.

Has anyone that has done PE casings give me some info on this subject?

Pros, cons, tips would be appreciated aswell as any grow longs/techniques that might help me out.

Whoa i think you have your definitions a little off at least thats what i got from the post.

Casing layer=Non nutritious material usually peat/verm,or verm/perlite etc etc.


Substrate=Nutritious for the mycelium to digest Coir,Manure,Compost etc etc.


Now i preffer a 50/50+ mix which is equal amounts of peat/verm and hydrated lime to ph buffer and calcium carbonate as a long term buffer.Sometimes i add perlite in with it to give it more of an airy texture.Hope that helps

Have no experience with casings and just know some of the basic stuff. Just done cakes before.

So lets say I did the compost route. How would I make the casing?

Break a fully colonized cake into small pieces and mix it up with the compost? Then what?

What you would do is pasterize your substrate(compost) at 160f for an hour and a half.Once cooled you take your cakes crumble them and "Spawn" them to the compost.Make sure to mix the compost and your crumbled cakes pretty good and allow 5-10 days to colonize the substrate.Then once colonized you take a casing layer mix like peat/verm or whatever you have decided and lay about a 1/8th of an inch or so over the fully colonized mycelium.
