By far the most illuminating & provocative book I've ever read (& if you read it you'll likely agree) was A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. It is exactly what it says it is... American history from the perspectives of, & in the words of, the majority of the people who comprise it; not simply that of the government/business leaders like you read in your high school history textbook.
