Below is the recipe I followed in order to make a culture broth.
For 1 liter total volume of liquid PDA agar you need:
250 g potatoes 15 g agar 10 g dextrose 1.5 g nutritional yeast (or yeast extract).
The instructions are as follows:
1.Shred the unpeeled potatoes into a colander and then rinse them for thirty seconds with cold tap water, or until clear. 2.Combine the rinsed potatoes with one liter of distilled water and gently boil for 30 minutes. 3.Filter the resulting potato broth through cheesecloth and discard the potatoes. 4.To the liter of potato broth add the agar, dextrose and yeast which you have previously weighed out, mixed together, and set aside. 5.While stirring gently, add in the mixed powdered ingredients. 6.Gently boil for ten minutes. 7.Take care to not allow the solution to boil over, or caramelize. 8.Add enough water to return the total volume of the solution to one liter. 9.Pour the solution while still hot and filter liquid through coffee filter (x1) into small jars. Use just enough to fill the containers half way.
I stopped here, had too, but I should have sterilized immediately? The solution has congealed completely, in the jsrs. What do I do from here?
Mix with more distilled water in order to dilute?
From this, I intend to inoculate many second generation LC quart jars. Rye grain is the prefered spawn medium, and then case to 50/50 coir/verm and 20-50% coffee grounds (based on what is available). All advice is welcome'
Sincerely,
Red.

Lots of this is completely unnecessary. Head down to the store and pick up some clear honey or karo (corn syrup)...

I think he knows this but is suggesting that you are doing so much unnecessary work and it would be a lot easier just to do an LC

that statement implys that he doesnt know what the recipe is used for correctly anyway..
An lc is much easier but they are both used for different things.
Here is a link for a very simple lc prep.

I gather that from this statement HE DOES know the difference. I think that maybe the subject line should have read "I am on the fast track....a question about agar cultures.

Hi folks,
Thanks for the replies.
I have an idea on the difference between agar and liquid cultures. There is so much info on LC's, which I started to study over the week-end, but there also seems to be some ambiguity on the culture broth recipes. I selected the PDA one, but it turns out this is for agar. Lesson learned! I'll get some honey and karo today and give it another go. I'll try both recipes to see which suits me best. Later, I’ll try the dextrose and malt recipe.
So I gather that the yeast and agar agar are unique to making an agar. Hence why it congealed so well. Thanks again for all the input.
Red.
