I'm too lazy...
    #7217190 - 07/24/07 08:54 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

to want to take the time to pasteurize 50/50, so I'm planning on just sterilizing it. Any one have a time on how long to PC, or any serious warnings about it? Thanks.

And yet, to me, that sounds completely backwards. If you're going to load them into jars to sterilize, you might as well pasteurize.

+ Put dirt in jars
+ Put foil over jars
+ Fill up large pot (or your pc) with jars
+ Pour in water (about half of jar's height)
+ Put plate on top of jars (keeps them from bouncing around)

---
While uncovered, bring the water to a boil. Put the lid on, turn the stove off (but leave it on the hot burner) and come back an 60-75 minutes later.

I use a glass top lid with a meat thermo jammed down into one of the jars to monitor. The thermometer will *not* be at 140 when you turn the heat off, but the boiling water (212(F) degrees) will continue to warm the jars...and the electric element of the stove will continue to heat the water for a while afterwards as it cools as well.

Easier than pasteurizing to me.

I'm not using jars, I'm using 50/50 verm peat, and I don't like pasteurizing because I use the oven tek, and I can never get the goddamn water content right.

i would suggest pressure cooking your casing mix, simply because it sterilizes..

I tend to soak any casing mix i use, for 24 hours prior to pcing.. when i use something like coir/verm

but now, i ONLY use VERM, medium fine grain verm.

pz.

why using only straight verm?

how long you PC yer casing for?

and why would you soak it for 24 hours ahead of time?

sterilizing casing mixture does not hold contaminates at bay as well as pasteurizing. Just for the record...

this is true. pc'ing kills off any beneficials.

Have you considered the microwave?

I nuke all my bulk subs and casing materials for 5 minutes, let sit for 5, nuke 5 more, let sit 5 more, nuke 5 more, and let cool.

I've been doing it that way for years, because its easier the pasteurizing in jars in the pc or dealing with dripping pillowcases full of boiling crap.

Contamination rates with this method are similar to pasteurization, with trich showing up after the first 3 flushes or so.

Peat is basically sterile anyway, because of the chemistry. As long as you don't introduce new contams, and do add some lime to balance pH- go ahead and be lazy.

And like the above poster, I've had good luck with the microwave.

partial sterilizations (microwave tek) has me a little leery, personally... but like I always say, YMMV...

If it didn't work so perfectly for me every time, I would be leery too!

:hehehe:

But as always, YMMV!

To all that posted -

Yes, I know the advantages of pasteurization of sterilization, and about killing beneficials. Thank you guys though.

I've not read up on microwave sterilization, or that whole boiling jars thing, but shall give it a shot.

Is lime necessary?

Yes/no.

I had success without it, just peat+perlite. But peat is acidic, and promotes trich growth. By balancing pH with lime, you reduce the ability of trich to colonize and grow.

So, if you don't care for mold, then lime is recommended.

Edit- but my best so far was cased with MGMC, so there you go.

just add extra water...

then squeeze the excess water out when you are done pasteurizing.
