I found this growing in some new soil we put in the garden. It has rained for the past few days and this little bugger popped up. I have no experience with ID'ing mushrooms but I think this might be some kind of psychedelic.

Habitat: soil/compost pile started no more than 3 weeks ago, the soil came from the garden center. It is underneath some kind of bush, but growing in soil, not grass.

Gills: Free gills, looks pretty much like a lighter version of the cap color. A lighter brown with a hint of rust or orange
Stem: Whitish, split in a few directions when bent in half, hollow, keeps the same width pretty much throughout the entire stem. 2cm wide.

Cap: Some sort of dark borwn with a rusty tint. The edges are slightly lighter then the rest of the cap, smooth, a littme more than an inch across.

Spore print color: in the process of taking one, it appearsa to be a light brown
Bruising: I'm not quite sure what this means
Location: Picked in Massachusetts

is that a psycadelic. If so what steps should i take to ensure of it's identity (taking spore print as we speak) and also, how can I store it so that it will not use potency while i wait for more to pop up?

Sorry for all the newb questions, I have never done shrooms before and every time i try to get them the connect fails to find them. As a result I have decided to take matters in my own hands.

is bruising what happens as it starts to dry out? If so the bruising, is a lighter variation of the orignal color, that is starting to form. THey look kind of like scratchs. Also, the cap's color is a but darker than the photos lead on.

if it was pan foe.. the spore print should have a tint of purple to it.. brownish/purple

also bruising is when the mushroom cap/stem has been damaged in some way it will turn another color ...pinching the stem can help show bruising... the colors can range from yellow, blue, red, brown, black, purple
.. u can try pinchin teh stem to observe the bruising of your mushroom...try it see what happens ...that is if its not too dry yet..

p.s i'm tellin you as of now that is not psychedelic. ...so I wouldn't even worry about storing it..

Its not active .

if you wanna hunt lawns and grassy fields ..the mushroom you're look to find is Panaeolus subbalteatus
a very common hallucinogenic mushroom which is widely distributed. The mushroom is a coprophiliac (dung-inhabiting) species which also grows well in other habitats including fertilized lawns, haystacks, compost heaps, and riding stables.
It grows abundantly year round after rain nearly everywhere and is common in Oregon, Washington and Northern California but also known to occur in all 50 states, Great Britain, Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia, Mexico, Central and South America and British Columbia

Not active = not magic.
May or may not be edible, however.

Eating wild mushrooms is sketchy at best. Grow some, then you'll know what you have.

First one looks like a psathyrella that grows near my creek.
The second is 100% conocybe lactea. poisonous mushrooms that have a melting trait to them. rusty spore print i expect.

> Conocybe lactea I would guess.

You are correct. The even more correct new name is Conocybe albipes.

The first species is a member of the Psathyrella genus.

Neither mushroom is hallucinogenic.
