Can you cultivate a picked mushroom

I found a neat looking mushroom in my backyard and I am curious if I can continue to grow it after I picked it out of the ground?
I put the stem in some water until someone can let me know if this is possible!

But like said above... you should ID it first. If you don't it might end up being just edible or posionus.

the water will only damage it quicker. Looks like agaricus... but which one I don't know. You would have to do some testing. Does it stain yellow?

A spore print will determine between Agaricus and Volvariella. Brown for agaricus and pink for Volvariella. but I don't see a volva.
Remember not all agaricus are table fair!

remember you all, He's asking if you can cultivate it! The answer you are looking for is "no". not by putting it in water and "transplanting" it. Fungus' belong to a different kingdom than plants do. Fungus do not have "roots". The only way you can Propagate it would be by spore germination or tissue culture.

most people that cultivate or moonshine get put away for a very very long time so that the "bug" gets out of our systems... the want, and desire to cultivate something from nothing. I saw that on the Moonshine show on discovery yesterday... some dude saying that..
I think the gov thinks knowledge should not be free, and some of it shouldn't be legal.

THat's a good one... and the HOOKED: Illegal Drugs and How They Got That Way are excellent documentaries. And no, the illegal drugs one isn't anti-drug. It's the history of how the drug came to be, it's early culture, and why/how it was made illegal. Interesting stuff. That series covered Heroin/Morphine/Opium, LSD, Cocaine, and Ecstasy in detail and briefly covered a few others. http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=70805 *two thumbs up*
