Some of my grow turned black
    #7215534 - 07/23/07 08:31 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

This has been my first time growing and for the most part it turned out well. My question is a few of my casings began to grow a black film/fuzz over the top of the cakes, as well as the shrooms themselves. These shrooms also came out to be very small, the largest only being 3.2 wet grams. When i picked them i got black residue all over my hands. Is this some kind of contamination, and are these shrooms safe to eat? Other casings that I had growing in the same closet grew normal and didn't turn black at all. Sorry I don't have a camera so I can't post pictures. Any input is appreciated!

Well if it is really dark purple and just look black they are just spores that have dropped. Do NOT smell or taste them by any means. Black mold can potentially be deadly. Were your veils broken?

Yeah the veils were broken. I've seen shrooms after the spores drop and this didn't quite look like that. Upon doing some further research i think there is a good possibility that it could be mold. Any idea what causes this mold? Too much humidity possibly, or could it be from contamination. Also, should I remove these casings from my closet so as to keep it from spreading to other casings?

If it's black it could be rotting from excess water on the shrooms for an extended period of time. Pics would help. I think it might be spores though. Sometimes it's darker/lighter then other times.

What causes mold- MOLD SPORES! If your already at the point of fruiting mushrooms then the possibility of it being mold is small. It's fairly hard for contamination to take hold when you're at that point. I tend to think that its mushroom spores.

Yea def. sounds like spores to me... when I do bulk caseings I normally wait until spores start dropping to harvest. In my experience the spores go EVERYWHERE turning most of the caps and most ofthe grow chamber purple/black. If the shrooms don't look/feel like they are rotting, then I'd say its spores.
