Quick Temp Question...

I'm gettin a water heater for the incubation period and keeping it at 80 degrees, im just wondering- when i get a thermometer to measure the warmth should I get one that you put in water and make sure the water is 80 degrees, or should i get a "dry" one (not in the water) and just measure the air in the box??
Oh, and im curious as to what spore you all grew your first time???- OR what you think is the easiest spore to grow, with a relative decent potency??? I'm growing indoors, and I've been trying to figure out which would be kinda simple so I don't fuck it up on my first time- Yet still potent. So give me your opinions on that...
Thanks guys!

im also having a hard time finding dry thermometers.
Most of them are either like to stick in your ear and take your temp. or put into your grill or some shit.
Do you guys have any brands you recommend?

save yourself the money and don't build / use an incubator. A lot of people spend a lot of money on incubator supplies only to find out, several hundred dollars later that colonizing at room temps only takes an extra day or two longer and causes less contaminations.
Most contaminates really take of and begin to thrive after 80+ (F) degrees whereas the increases in mycelium growth is only marginal.
As for thermometers, I like the remote weather stations. They're not accurrate in terms of temp or humidity if you're trying to control it to the n'th degree but we're only going for ranges here. (get yourself a good sling hygrometers though, battery operated just don't do it)

not sure what a "remote weather station" or "sling hygrometers" are...
but the onnly reason i was going to do the whole incubation thing is because where I live it gets REALLY cold in the winter, and since i want to grow year round, i may as well build one.
...right?

unless where you live, you don't have heat in your house, you still wouldn't need an incubator. My incubator is a shelving unit that sits in the garage (winter) and in the guest bedroom (summer).
I keep it indoors in the summer time because the garage temps are between 70-90 in the summer time and I don't like anything over 78(F) to incubate.
"Remote weather stations" are little sensors that wireless send temp and humidity readings to a little pda sized "base-station". Costs about $40 for one sensor and the base and about $20 for each additional sensor. I use them primarily to monitor garage, attic and outside ambient temps...but so long as you understand that the humidity readings on these aren't accurate over 90%, they're great for what they do.
A "sling hygrometer" measure humidity very++ accurately and is great when you need precision over ease of use.
