Add Verm??
    #7213209 - 07/23/07 08:50 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

A few people told me that verm would be benifitial to add to my substrate to "fluff" things up. I have been looking at substrate teks and I havnt seen any verm in them. What would the experts suggest?

Heres my substrate recipe as of now,

Substrate:
70% Coir
15% Cofee Grounds
10% Garden Gypsum
5% Worm Castings
2 Table Spoons of Kelp Meal (per 5 pounds)

Would verm be benifitial? I'm gunna need a bag of it for my casing so its not like I'm going out and buying it just for my substrate.

If I should at it at what perecnt should it be added to my recipe?

The verm is used with coir to retain moisture better, but I don't think that'd be an issue with your mix. If you did want to add it tho, you can mix it in somewhere around 20% of your total bulk volume.

Personally, I think that looks fine, but a little verm wouldn't hurt things. Just remember to add it into the substrate separately.

That is to say, you mix the coir and gypsum up dry, first, then add the kelp, coffee grounds and castings together and hydrate it all to field capacity. THEN hydrate the verm to field capacity and mix it into the substrate.

As always, YMMV...

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
