I have been pondering moving to a hippie commune, there is one a couple states over called "The Farm" and a few others a little bit farther from me, does anyone know anything about moving to one or what it's like?

Most of them are complete and total scams. We have a family friend who went into one who had to give up all her assets and worldly possessions to the commune, lives in a little shitty apartment type thing, and can only eat certain foods. Why the hell would anyone want that kind of lifestyle? Also she got married within the commune and the leader guy married them by videochat because he was off somewhere else.
Anyone remember that commercial awhile back about Bob the Commune leader?

so are you saying they are cult like? The one I read about called "The Farm" has no central bank and everyone is allowed to have their own monies and stuff.

i dont know if i would call them scams. the way of life is a way of having few material possessions. happiness doesnt come from materials. people in communes are people who don't want to be a part of our materialistic society, working 9 to 5 jobs and paying taxes. they try to find happiness through other means, like being with each other, living off the land, making music together, or whatever it is that they do.
maybe what i'm talking about would be the "ideal" hippy commune, and maybe a lot of them don't live up to that or maybe have ulterior motives, but the concept itself certainly sounds great to me. but what do i know? i've never been to one or seen one in real life. my best advice i guess would be to proceed with caution.

There is a commune/hostel type thing near here called the Hostel in the Tree's.
It's really amazing. A close knit COMMUNity of friendly, like minded people they grow their own food have their own source of energy have tons of land nice tree-houses a hot rock sauna
some communes are bound to be cooler than others, i suppose i think it would be cool i wouldn't mind doing it for a couple of years

fuck moving to one..buy some land and start your own..
Provide all your hippie friends with cheap land, and cheap access to raw materials and you could start your own profitable commune.
Don't join one of them crazy ass cults though.

Ha, I took a sociology class my sophomore year and the professor had some commune people come talk to us.

It's in Virginia. Something about it seemed really appealing to me. I'm thinking when I graduate I may check it out, not necessarily live there, but I'm still really curious about that sort of lifestyle

If you are talking about the Farm in Tennessee, I spent a few days as a visitor there in the mid 80s. They started off as an all-for-one, one-for-all community, until they were on the edge of bankruptcy. Seems like when people wanted to use a car or something, it was their right because it was the commune's car (read 'my car'), but when it came time to fix the car or put gas in the tank, they didn't worry about it because it was the commune's car (read 'some one elses responsibility'). Lots of people showed up that wanted a place to sleep, food to eat, and other resources. These people were not pulling their weight, on the whole, and it almost collapsed.
Since then, they restructured, and basically require people to pay rent and other fees for living. So that means a job, which for most people is a job off the commune. A few people worked in businesses on the Farm, with publishing, food production, etc. But most had to get cars, get jobs, and otherwise work for 'the man.' It became more like a bunch of people with similar philosophies rooming together.
Also had a friend whose father got tired of being a university professor, so he moved to an 'egalitarian community' aka commune. They were weaving hammocks to sell, and in spite of their stated purpose of dissolving the hierarchy and all being equal, managed to set up their own politics and power structure. I heard some good things about it, but on balance, no one I know that visited there really liked it or wanted to live there.

I've hear good things about the farm. It seems life they have a lot of programs going on. I think if you are really serious about moving there, they offer a week in the spring and one in the fall you can go stay there and live as they live. Its definitely one of the bigger communes.
