n00b grow of ATL#7 on BRF cakes = Odd predicament (PICS in post)

howdy! ok it was my first grow & I didn't do enough research on my particular strain (Atlantis). I got the (wrong) impression from the PF tek I watched that it works for basically all types of mushrooms. It's been 17 days since inoculation & I think we are starting to see some sclerotia forming. I'm using 1/2 pint jars of BRF & Vermiculite. I know now that getting fruit from them is highly unlikely. I also know now that your not suppose to use vermiculite substrate for sclerotia. BUT what's done is done, so now I'm not sure what I should do next. I was hoping someone might offer some advice or Ideas. I would be very very grateful. Here are the pics from just an hour ago.

How poisonous is vermiculite to ingest? Should we try to fruit them after colonization reaches 100%? Or just harvest the sclerotia? I've read people with rye jars will let them grow for months, I got these rather small 1/2 pint jars of BRF/verm, how long would you think I should let these colonize? Any..ANY..advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my post. A.0.

you're definitely forming sclerotia.. i would never ever ingest verm, it's inert for the most part, and it's no longer mined alongside asbestos, but still, it can't be good for the human body.
my only advice, is clone some of the sclerotia and start over on either wbs or rye grass seed.

Yeah. You could probably do an extraction on the sclerotia you have there- but for the work involved, starting over with rye grass seed is going to be your best bet.
Sclerotia are cool, though. "Psychic truffles, baby!"
(And your techniques are fine, you've proven that.)

Thanks for the responses. Everything at this point for me is a learning experience and I'll give a shot at cloning them. Nothing to lose. I already put in an order for some P.cubensis (Puerto Rico & B+) & I'm allot more confident now that I can succeed at getting a good harvest from those strains. So you definitely don't suggest eating the sclerotia due to the verm? A.0.

I might eat them, once. But I wouldn't recommend it.

You can separate out the sclerotia later and eat them. I doubt there will be any verm in the stones, but if there is, it won't hurt you. RR

I've always advised against vermiculite in sclerotia grows because it sticks to the surface of the sclerotia and its very tedious to remove completely. Since you its your first try, you probably won't mind picking it off for a few hours Eating a few small particles isn't likely to cause any problems. It generally won't get inside the sclerotia so you just need to work on the surface. In my experience the presence of vermiculite actually stimulates sclerotia formation.
The amount of time you allow them to grow is up to you. You can harvest them at any time you think there is enough to be worthwhile. This strain matures at about 3 months and after that you won't get much more sclerotia. I personally let them grow until they slow or even stop. I leave them alone as long as I can see them growing on a daily basis.
Looking good so far!
