move to wbs and use combinations of ingredients for example

Coir,Gypsum,Veg oil, straw, horse manure, cow manure, small amount of chicken manure, coffee.if mixed in the right proportions you will have an awesome substrate.

You should invest in a couple of pounds of manure and or organic compost. Your mushrooms will be very happy!

I wouldnt do that since then the outside of the cake would be covered in nutes that bacteria and mold would thrive on.

I do
5 cups Coir
10% gypsum (by volume)
veg oil 1 ounce per kilo of substrate
straw 5 cups
horse manure 5 cups
cow manure 3 cups
chicken manure 5%
coffee 5 cups
you can add more straw if you need to fluff it up a bit or use verm to do that.

Huh?

Spawning a cake into bulk is the same as spawning grain into bulk, man. Effectiveness is about the same, it's just a little bit more of a pain to work with (due to crumbling). You just break it up inside a bag and spread it. Maybe I misunderstood what you're saying here.

Anyway, since this is the guy's first grow, don't encourage him to add chicken shit and god knows what else. He should start with something basic, something that doesn't require a full recipe to mix up properly.

I was under the impression that he would take a cake (or a big cake like from a tub)dunk it in a coffee water mix then put that in the fruiting chamber which would be bad.my first time i ever grew anything i used a mix like that you just have to research and know what you are doing.

Oh, I see--I thought you were replying to the other post. Yeah, dunking in coffee water seems pretty non-productive to me. I doubt it would cause contams, though--bacteria go for nutritious material, generally, not stuff like coffee water (if you leave your coffee out for a week or two, it gets mold islands, but never bacteria).

A mix is fine, but I think KISS is better for the first go. Those ingredients are optimal, but when newbies find a recipe like that they somehow imagine they have to go shopping for chicken shit and everything else in the world--that's way more of an investment of effort than most people want for their first grow. Just my opinion, though--if he wants to go for a full recipe, by all means.
