lol i guess this is why you should use jar tops with cakes
    #7202060 - 07/20/07 11:01 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

So i birthed like 8 or so cakes in a FC ontop of chicken wire over the perlite. Didnt use the can tops under the cakes but I kinda wish I did becuase on a few cakes the biggest mushie coming off of the cake has grown straight down hah. It is interesting becuase the stem of the mushroom is about 3 times the size of the chicken wire hole itself. I figured the mushie would have died from being choked by now but it still seems to be thriving and i am glad of that becuase I was stressing on how I was going to get that one from out of there without knocking over the rest of the cakes. Sooo heh I guess the growing downwards means I had some light reflecting off the bottom of the perlite?

i was gonna do this too, but from what i understand. if they grow out the bottom, as your finding out. they will almost be a wasted cause. AND, they take away from the "strength" of your shrooms to grow on top

Not necessarily, the fruiting bodies will simply expand wherever they find room to do so. Instead of using your jar lids you can just use a piece of aluminum foil and it functions just as well to prevent this scenario.

Yeah, ignore that crap folks.

I intentionally birth my cakes (both BRF and straw logs) directly onto the greenhouse bars in order to give them more sufrace area for fruiting. Fruits come from the top, the sides, and the bottom. Those that appear on the bottom do become a little larger and healthier than the ones on the top for the simple reason that they get more moisture, and condensation from the bars drips down and runs along their stem. This is not bad for them, and in fact seems to help them thrive--while the moisture is usually in full-droplet form, it's not sedentary, so it doesn't seem to lead to any risk of the fruit aborting or going septic.

There is absolutely no scientific reason to believe those growing on the bottom might be less potent. Sproket13 has no clue what he's talking about on that subject.

Light diffuses. It's never purely directional. The bottom surface of the cake gets some light too, no matter what you do. It's not a problem, so long as shrooms are growing where you can pick them--in fact I consider it ideal.
