Too much lime?
    #7209285 - 07/22/07 07:25 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Well I tried something new and used this as a casing mix but I'm not sure if it's too much lime. Reason why I'm questioning it is because it was applied about 96 hours ago and there are no signs myc. popping through. I shifted a corner around with a pen to see if any progress and it hasn't grown.

3 1/2 cups Verm.
3 1/2 cups Peat moss
3 1/2 cups Coir
3/4 cup crushed coral
1/8 cup hydrated lime

Any input would help. Thanks

Ok the Percentages for this are:

30.7% Peat moss
30.7% Verm.
30.7% Coir
6.5% Crushed coral
1.1% Hydrate lime

The Casing layer is about 1/2 an inch.
I pasteurized it as usual using an Oven Bag Tek.(This has always worked for me)
- All Mixed to field cap., put in an oven bag, core temp. brought to 170F and then left alone for 2-2.25 hours. Allowed to cool for about 18 hours then applied.

What i'm really trying to look at is if the crushed coral - a source of calcium carbonate (aka, LIME) - will really have a large impact on the pH of the mixture because it's crushed and not powdered/floured. The percentage of hydrated lime is ok, even a little conservative...if it weren't for the crushed coral. Still I think it'd be fine.

How far colonized was your substrate when you added the casing layer?
How deep is the casing layer and how deep is the substrate layer?
Did you re-cover and incubate again for those 96 hours after the casing was applied?

there are lots more questions than "was it the lime?" heh...

Well I haven't changed anything from any previous grows. The sub. is wheat straw at about 3.5-4 inches deep. The casing is about half an inch. Yes, it was re-covered and placed back in my "warmer" room. It's about 75-76F. As far as the crushed coral goes if you add 1 cup to a gallon of water it brings the pH to 8.5. Oh and once the top of the straw was 100% colonized I let it sit for another week.

I've always had better luck fruiting straw uncased, but your casing mix should be fine. That's not too much lime.

You might of used the kind of lime that burns and kills the myc. with my casings its been about 3 days and they are nearly fully colonized.

the chor u said bring oxgen or what to the mushies? makes the mushies tear off earier when u pick them, and saves the myc but idk anything else.

best of luck

RR - you say you have better luck uncased... do you mean as far as weight wise, pinning times, even pinset, size..??? I have another tub that is uncased still and I would be applying the C. layer in about 3 days. Should I give it a go w/o the layer?

Skip the casing and see how it works. Straw has a pretty good texture for fruiting uncased, and the hollow straw holds a LOT of water, negating the need for a casing layer, providing you maintain near 100% humidity at the surface of the straw.

Try laying a sheet of wax paper over the surface of the straw. Lift it to fan, and change it out daily or at least every second day with a fresh sheet.

Sounds good I'll take plenty of pictures and we'll see what happens. Thanks for the advice!
