Substrate Material
    #720853 - 07/03/02 04:58 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Well, my friend is almost ready to start growing. He was wondering what would be a good substrate material...

He has a Mirro 4.2 quart pressure cooker, and is planning on using 1/2 pint jars.

Of course theres always BRF and vermiculite, but he was thinking of using finch seed... or possibly rye berries.

He plans on casing the cakes.

So what do you guys recommend?

I have had real good results with inoculating millet and spawning that to wheat straw. Millet is cheap and available all year round. Straw is also available year round and costs five bucks for an entire bail. I have had little problems with contams on straw, except on long pieces that poke up and out of the casing sometimes get the green. Strw produces large flushes and since it is so cheap you can make extra deep substrate for extra big fruits.

4.2 quarts is pretty small....mine is 22 quarts!!!!

BRF is a good place to start and will get you into the swing of things.

My personal experience is be prepared to not put too much faith in one batch. In other words, it's better to do a small amount of jars one day....wait a few days, do another....wait a few and do another....to spread your risks.

Nothing more frustrating than doing, say, 12 jars and waiting a month for them to colonize only to find out you've got bacteria or something and they smell weird.

Well if this is your first time start with BRF/Verm. How ever if you want to try some thing a little different this is what it use to add a bit more nutrients.(atleast it seems to work better for me) i use

2 parts verm soaked till you can squeaze out a few drops of water with your hands.

2 parts Whole Brown Rice (cooked per instructions nn the bag/box.
1 part Bird seed with sunflower seeds removed. Steep and leave sitting ofr 24 hours(do this the day before you want to make up the jars.for spores to germinate and be easier to kill in the PC.

Mix this all together and create jars per pf tek. I like to use the ramsey seal my self. ie. alum. foil and verm. Presure cook for 50 mins allow to cool and innoculate.

Don't use 1/2 pint jars for birdseed or Rye grain.
