A NEW WAY TO SHAKE

so anyways, im colonizing jars of 20/80 corn/rye and due to the clumpy nature of mixed grains when colonizing jars, I had something of an idea. We all know that after about half a week, you can shake your grain jars to redistribute the mycellium and get it to access the uncolonized grains more rapidly...
Anyways, because rye and corn tend to get chunky in the jars when the myc grows between them, you can semi-shake the jars and get clumps with large spaces between them that isint filled up fully with loose grain. By having jars with more air space evenly distributed in the jar, you get large fluffy growths of mycellium, stretching out into the open space in the jar like fine hairy white mist.
It definately seems to me that by doing this you create more mycellium volume. I would ask for the experts to comment on this. I will hope to have pictures up soon to better describe what I have been doing.
I really think this might revolutionize the way people do grain spawn

ummm why would you want to use corn? you have the corn in with the rye?

wouldn't all that fluffy myc will just get squished when you empty the jars. If you gave it something to grow onto besides grain, like coir you could get the same effect.
I add a handful of coir to my jars, a little on the dry side, this helps with dispersion of myc and moisture control. If you put the coir on top of the rye, then inoculated, and let sit, when you shook to get big clumps, the coir would fill in the pocktes and colonize fast.... i think.
ehhh, don't listen to me, I'm crazy.

Grain jars shouldn't be filled more than 2/3 to 3/4 full to allow room for shaking. If you'll bang the jars against a fully inflated bicycle tire, the kernels will separate easily. RR

I like to mix about 3/4 rye with 1/4 corn as I just tend to get the best results from mixed grain. The corn tends to not get that weird blue/grey look when the myc colonizes it as just corn alone does. Also, when my myc colonizes, the myc growing inbetween definately has some solidity to it.
I opened up my jars today and spawned 7 one quart jars each to a tub of poo about 6 inches deep and 1.5x2.5 feet wide/long. The hollow spaces that had myc growing in them seemed to at least have some solidity to them and they seemed... sticky? It was like the myc hairs try to grab onto stuff to grow on, its pretty cool. I shook the tubs up gently to spread the poo and spawn around and they are now sitting in the closet with a flat piece of cardboard on top. I find that cardboard doesnt drip down condensation like plastic does, and you can wipe it down with alcohol easily enough...
Anyways, back to topic. 2 days after I had semi-shaken the mixed grain jars, it was very visible that growth was increased, especially in areas where both hollow spaces and loose grains were. It seems that myc like to grow along the surface of a substrate, and that even the small spaces between grains are constricting enough to slow them down some...
All this is speculation, but its the only way I can account for what I am seeing. I would venture a guess that by shaking it up so it remains as loose as possible, you get better gas distribution throughout the jar, thus resulting in faster myc growth in areas where O2 is readily available. Im sure that diffusive processes would guarantee even distribution throughout the jar as long as there were no places sealed off by solid myc growth, but im not sure. I might also venture a guess that leaving some of the growth slightly chunky you cause less stress to the myc and it recovers much more quickly.
All in all, ive had 18 jars completely colonized in 10 days by this method. I wish i had a camera, but mine is broke.
