Ok, so my question is does this look right? It's hard to capture the little "forest" of mycelium poofs in a photo but I did my best. The whole surface of my casing is virtually covered with these little 1/8" or so long growths. At first I was worried about too much mycelium growth (overlay I think is the term) but then all the little 'trees' started growing. They are cylindrical up to a point and then fan out at the top. Looks a lot like another image I ran across the enlarged section in the lower right. Is this what is referred to as primordia? I'm trying to get an idea of what I'm looking at through the different stages of fruiting. Thanks for the support!

both of those pictures show severe overlay. if those were mine i'd kinda be upset. i haven't ever run into severe problems with overlay, but whenever i do casings, if any white puffs start showing on the top, i'd patch them before initiating fruiting. good luck

you might try to scrap it a little and then put some more casing over the top of it.

What on God's green earth did you case with?! It obviously something nutritious enough to promote that amount of overlay.

to answer fish42, i believe the tray on the left is geolite, but I didnt take that pic I pulled it off the web so no way to be sure. Mine is cased with coco and vermiculite... and yes obviously there is overlay but as far as I have read thats not a problem with certain types of shrooms as much as others.... wont it fruit anyway?? and nobody answered my original question about the forest of mycelium poofs

no that is not primordia, through my experiences that is just thick ass myc growing due to high humidity...hope that answers your question

thx 1shot. I guess I was just curious because the overlay went from flattish at first and then sprouted the little "trees" which look so distincly different from the rest of the surface. Im just out the gate on this whole project so some failure or at least trial and error is to be expected I guess

i did, its called overlay, thats not something you want. fix it if you want to fruit it. otherwise your pinset will be disappointing and you will have wasted that casing.

yea what i would do is take a scrapping tool to it and break it all up and then put a fresh layer of casing over it, hopefully that would help out your overlay problem quite a bit.

I'm quite pleased with the results so far. Was wondering if some veterans could rate this pinset for me.
To update you on overall progress: I had multiple little tubs that all exhibited various stages of overlay... so I chose some of the ones with the lease mycelium on them and just let them try and fruit (but removed them from the tubs since they had basically become cakes), took 1shot1kill's advice on others and did a deep scrape then recase, and for others I completely crumbled and then recased with a thin layer and put right back in the fruiting chamber. Can't wait to see which method ends up producing the highest yields! If the ones I scraped and crumbled end up with pinsets close to this one I will be pleased.
