Need HELP from the elders or youngings with good taste in music
    #7204258 - 07/20/07 11:11 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all,

I'm thinking of buying some good psychedelic music from the late 60's.

I like basically all the great bands from that time, but have never heard an album in its entirety and just limited songs I can download.

so for those who know, whats your favourite albums from the late 60's?

Jefferson airplane, cream, etc.

thanks for any help.

And there is where God lives, where the dead live, the spirits and the saints, a world where everything has already happened and everything is known. That world talks. It has a language of its own. I report what it says. The sacred mushroom takes me by the hand and brings me to the world where everything is known. It is they, the sacred mushrooms, that speak in a way I can understand.":mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

i wish i could help, but my musical tastes are quite picky. i will recommend some stuff that is just good Psychadelic stuff, may not be from the 60s though. you can take it for what it is:

-The Fountain Soundtrack
-Vanilla Sky Soundtrack
-Anything T00L (namely Lateralus, and Aenima)
-Eric Whitacre (he is an AMAZING composer, he does mostly choral stuff, but it's the most moving music i have ever heard, check out "When David Heard")
-Pink Floyd
-some Simon and Garfunkel stuff is pretty groovy and very warm and comforting
-you can check out my stuff  (shameless plug I know) http://www.myspace.com/brahmaart
-Sigur Ros
-Boston
-CCR
-if you like some modern jazz/lounge stuff, Harry Connick Jr. is fun to listen to
-Imogen Heap ("Hide and Seek" is pretty trippy, not like anything i have heard before)
-The Dire Straits, and anything Mark Knophler or James Taylor
-if you like the industrial sounds, NIN is pretty fun
-The Shins are fun also

anyways, i know it's not what you were asking for...but yeah, just thought i'd try to help in the best way i could

take care

oh boy.. I hope you're prepared to be bombarded with suggestions..

Mainstream:
Beatles*
Doors*
Jefferson Airplane
Moody Blues*
Nektar
Pink Floyd*
Yes

Not so mainstream:
Curved Air (Air Cut)
Cosmic Sounds (Zodiac)
United States of America* (The United States of America)
White Noise* (An Electric Storm)

*=highly recommended

Recommended albums are in parenthesis, didn't include any for mainstream bands, since you can pretty much get anything and not lose..just go to amazon type them in and get one of the first couple albums that comes up based on album sales, you get the idea.

There, a palatable condensed list of things of the top of my head for your convenience and enjoyment.  There were so many great artists at the time doing new things, but only ever made one album.  Lots of great stuff from the era, period.  But the suggestions you get should get you rolling.  Enjoy :smile2:

Everyone pretty much nailed it

Also check out The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Herbie Hancock (specifically Headhunters), Donovan, and the 13th Floor Elevators (forget if they're 1960's or not, but still excellent

As well as Donovan (mentioned above), I forgot to list

All Led Zeppelin, especially the first five albums

Space Oddity - David Bowie
Hunky Dory - David Bowie
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie

Also you might like all three Nick Drake albums, early Bob Dylan and early Cat Stevens.

Happy Trails without all the skips and pops just doesn't seem right, does it? And Bitching Brew's choices from the 70s Progressive era were excellent. Especially the inclusion of Gentle Giant. I might add Van der Graff Generator's World Record and Godbluff. And a dash of Roxy Music and P.F.M.

I second the herbie hancock motion, if you like jazz at all, even a little bit then go out right this minute and pick up Headhunters, easily his best album. Watermelon Man is my fav song, but sly and chameleon are great as well. also any beatles man of course, and i like the dead big time so i would recommend picking up live 72' or live/dead both great picks

The Beatles
Cream
Porcupine Tree (not from the '60's but they remind me of a modern-day version of Cream)
Caravan (they may have been in the '70's but they are still pretty Psychedelic)

i'm going to go slightly obcsure, as i'm sure most will respond with some quality well-known artists.

Try these:

Os Mutantes (brazilian fusion band blending 60's psych rock with the emerging jazz scene from that country...quite a good mix)

The United States of America (name of the band. pioneers in trippy electronic sounds, blended with tradition psych a la Jefferson Airplane.)

Ennio Morricone ((find Mondo Morricone Volumes 1-3 for a great retrospective on the brilliant work this man created. As a companion to any trip Morricone will add a sense of grandeur and flow with quasi-classical compositions with definite psych-rock leanings)

Piero Umiliani (Another Italian composer working mainly in the 60's and 70's. He put the "groove" in "groovey" and if you hear the tune "Sequenza Psicadelica" please tell that isn't a sublime display of pyschedlia!)

Aphrodite's Child - 666
It's a great album.

The Yardbirds - Roger the Engineer
I've actually been looking for this one on vinyl. It's got some good shit on it, it's right at the tipping point as far as experimental guitar playing is concerned. After this album, clapton quit, jeff beck joined, and then Beck conned Jimmy Page into the band as well.

Just a couple gems there...
