Sterilizing Syringes

Hey everyone! If my cat is just sterilizing a couple of syringes full of distilled water in a pressure cooker, how long should they be in there? I sterilize jars for an hour, but I can't imagine it would take that long for a couple of syringes.
Thanks!

20 minutes should be plenty.

Microwave a mug of water for 3 minutes and then suck it up and purge it out after one minute...repeat three times. Wrap empty (no water inside) syringe up in tin foil and pressure cook for 20min at 15PSI. Now, microwave more water for 3min and suck this up into your syringe. I've used this many times with success.

i just wipe my syringes out with alcohol(make sure you get the rubber stopper).i suck up a little bit of alcohol then draw the plunger all the way back, squeeze out the alcohol. then fill them with distilled water and rinse them out...do it a couple of times probably 3 at least. after that your syringes are sterile. i do this in a small room with no air curent that i sterilize with a 10%alch/h20 mix. i havent got a contaminated syringe yet.

If you use a solution of 10% alcohol your not in any way sterilizing anything. I'm almost sure most microorganisms can survive that.
Yeasts are active untill a solution reaches 14% volume of alcohol. And they don't die at 14%, they just become inactive. Besides that, there are a lot of alcohol resistant bacteria (even to 96% vol. alcohol).
Probably you never had a contaminated syringe because they are sterile when you buy them and unless you pull unsterile air or liquids inside they will remain sterile.
Not flaming. Just think about it!

Most stores sell rubbing alcohol in 70 and 90 % both will do the trick and a lot less work then pressure cooking

Oh, i misunderstood your post. Sorry.
Cool to know that alcohols work.
PC'ing syringes feels like a waste of time and energy. I can buy sterile syringes in drug stores where i live and they're quite cheap so i rarely bother sterilizing and reusing them.

Does the width of the actual needle matter for spore syringe making? The ones sold at the drug store are made for people so the needle is much thinner than one a vendor send you.

>>tell em you need large gauge syringes for animal vaccinations.<<
Heh, I never even lie to people when they ask me why I need the crazy stuff I go looking for. I just tell them that I need a syringe to inoculate sterilized substrate with living mycelial tissue to procure a culture.
Nobody's ever asked another question.

Oh, my cat would love to get a whole bunch of packaged sterile syringes from a medical supply company, but right now his living situation doesn't allow for getting strange deliveries to his home address. I mean, it's one thing to convince someone at the drug store or whereever that you're doing animal vaccinations (or even to tell them that you're a mycologist), but it's totally another to have to explain to the cats you live with why you're getting syringe shipments from medical companies.

FD: Just a quick suggestion if you'd like to find a good option for new syringes...why not just have them delivered to your work address? I almost always have anything sent to me at work (when I have a job) cause UPS and USPS have issues with leaving packages at my apartment building since we don't have an office or a porch.
But from what others have been saying it seems like cleaning out a syringe you have already is just as good as long as you are mindful of the proper methods.

Boppity

Fana- get a po box.... get a friend to set it up and have everything delivered to fake identies...it only should cost about 30 dollars for 6 mos...tell them youll hook them up nice and let them have use of the po box....its really handy when your dodging bills, court summons and shit like that...the only person whos actually has to show id is the person setting it up then they can say "my room mate "insert fake name here" will be receiveing mail here." then order the syringes in a fake name. im assuming you live in the us though....

I was under the impression that you could not receive packages at a PO Box address.

nope. you can get any package at a po box...if you receive a high volume of packages theyll want you to get a bigger box but my friend has the smallest one and when he gets a package they put a key with a number on it and then he goes to another part of the post offiice and picks up his package.

Even better is to use a private shiiping/receiving place like mail boxes ect.. They use a street address and a # so it looks like an apt building when you give the address,They also sign and hold all packages:)
