has anyone had a problem with popcorn?

The first time I used pc it went great. My last batch I soaked for 24 hours and drained for half an hour. When packing into jars i noticed that the kernels didn't seem as expanded as the last time. I PC'ed and inoculated anyways and its been almost a week with no sign of growth. I dont think the kernels absorbed any/enough water. Anyone else experience this?

Popcorn is a very poor spawn. It has poor nutrient proprieties.
Rye is the way to go.
Can't find Rye?
Winter wheat berries is the way to go
Can't find Wheat berries?
Millet is the way to go.
Can't find Millet?
WBS is the way to go.

True, WBS is more user friendly than straight millet. I will give you that.
Winter Wheat Berries are the shit though, next to Rye that is.
Either way, don't stray far out of those grains listed there. Unless you have experience and want to try something new, not caring about your results.

Thanks for the tips. I switched to popcorn because it was cheap and readily available. I'll just go back to using rye. It makes sense, since i have never had the problems i'm having now before I switched to popcorn. Thanks guys!

The last time I used popcorn (although it was mixed with wbs and whole grain wheat), I simmered it for 45-60 minutes and then drained it after soaking it for 24 hours and had no problems whatsoever. Just keep pissing around with it until it meets the criteria of the "spoon test."

popcorn is as good as any other grain as long as you simmer it for an hour or so, and let it sit in the pot over night.
it also takes a while for it to germinate, but it will explode quickly. my last batch of popcorn i started july 6th, and now its in the fruiting chamber waiting to pin.
it ripped through the spawn run in a few days. it rocks. i dont use incubators either.

WBS is cheaper than popcorn by far, and very friendly to work.

Oh, it's easy! Rinse WBS, scoop out all floaters. Soak the WBS overnight. (I rinse a few times, but you don't have to). Boil for about 10 minutes. Pour into strainer while still boiling. Toss and shake, then let it drain. Jar it. PC it. Cool it. Noc it up.
Easy-peasy.

You should be looking for Wild Bird Seed.
I went to the dollar store, got eight pounds for $2. Don't get the fancy pet bird stuff, get the cheap bags.

This might be irrelevant to mention at this point in the thread, but I've had better results with white popcorn than yellow, maybe because the grains are smaller. However, it could be a spurious correlation; I'm not really sure.

popcorn has allot of surface area so you dont get as much mycelium like you would with wbs,wbs contains allot of nutes to provide during the flush(s) and has more inoculation points.the answer is simple.

Low water content (unless you mean almost NO water content) is a delaying factor, not a ruining one.
I had a wheat jar that didn't start colonizing until three weeks in. It just finished the other day, no problems.
