Were to buy Coir?
    #7199610 - 07/19/07 08:09 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Were would I find Coco Coir?

Also were would I find Garden Gypsum? I think I read somewere that someone grinded down sheet rock as a substitute for garden gypsum? I dont even know what it is but if Garden Gypsum is just grinded down sheet rock then I have a shit load of it in my basement. Anyone want to comment on this (I could be completly wrong and sound crazy but I swore I read it on the forums)

I know drywall is made of gypsum. Not sure about sheet rock. You should be able to find gypsum at most Do-It Centers and Lowe's. Never seen it at Home Depot, but they may have it.

Bed A Beast reptile Bedding from pet stores, or from garden stores as either seedling bed material or hydroponic supplies. $5 for a brick.

I get these "beyond peat" 5kg bricks from my local hardware/garden store for $8. Another reason I love coir.

Peace

grinding down a piece of sheetrock/drywall is not the same as garden gypsum, but the stuff is a PITA to find lately since the whole concept of organic gardening has been on the decline lately.

Hydroponics stores will carry though and mail order/online ordering is always an option.  As for coco-coir, you can buy a case of it from online hydroponic stores for as little as $50 for 28 of them (less than $2 a brick) or you can go to any major petstore and pay about $4 (USD) a brick for them.

Im looking to avoid shipping anything but if it comes down to it I will. Ive been reading through threads on Coir and its been stated that certian coir is better then others. The beyond peat sounds like the best deal but before I purchase anything I'm going to post the brand to see if its a "good" coir or a bad "coir". Thanks for the help I would have had no idea were to find it. Looks like I'll be making soem phone calls to a shitload of stores this weekend.

As far as gypsum goes I hope I dont have a hard time finding it I think Ive been hearing its getting harder to find

Coir...... Pet co. or Pet smart. Looks like this
gypsum......... Home depot. Looks like this

You hear people say that you want to stay away from pelletized gypsum. I put it in the blender or food processor and make it into a fine powder. works like a charm

Nearly any pet store will have bricks of coir in their reptile section, its usually 5 bucks a brick but if you hit a few different pet stores to look for it you can always fine "Eco-Earth" shrink wrapped 3 bricks for 8 bucks, buy all of them and clear of the whole shelf, than go back the next day after they restock it and do it all over again:hehehe:

Yes you will most likely have to put drywall into a grinder to get it in a powder unless you want to get a 50 lb:whoah: box of the stuff(Also in the drywall aisle)..If its like it his here where you live the only gypsum you will find in the garden section will be "Pelletized" and its not what you want

I have no qualms having anything shipped to my house, so I wouldn't fret about it. As for the type of coir, you're looking for (no joke) low-sodium coir. Depending on where in the world it's harvested, it can be very salty from ocean air. A good hydroponics brand coco-coir like coco-tek is low sodium and pre-leached. I like to get the "natural" blend as it has less chunks and long-stranded fibers.
