general pasteruization question
    #7202945 - 07/20/07 03:07 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

greetings shroomerites

i have been pasteurizing recently using the styro-cooler tek and have had fair results thus far... but while measuring the temps of my cooler during my last round, i realized that the water touching the walls had dropped below ideal temps (130-135) whereas the core remained between 150-160. is this something to worry about? and if so what can i do to correct this problem? i already use one cooler inside another...

id personally add another batch of hot water (160 degree or so) to it, and mix it up by hand halfway through, and possibly pasteurize a bit longer, say 1:30 to 2:00 hours.

As long as your core temp of your substrate is at 150 for 2 hours you are fine

in addition, maybe get bigger tubs, so that way, even if the outside temperature drops, but the core remains the same...the pillowcase will only be occupying the core, and theres 2-3 inches of tub space between sides and substrate.

a bathtub is a really good place to do this.
if possible, crank your hot water heater up really hot (140ish is usually about as hot as ppl can get it), use that water to start the process and fill the bulk of the tub, and have already boiling water in large pots on your stove to add to the big tub...until raised to temperature...
also cover with a blanket or two to keep heat, and tuck it in for a nap
