Any way to rid my shrooms of those fucking maggots

Hey everyone. Is there any way to kill the goddamn maggots that eat my shrooms? I find tons of them in the box I dry the shrooms in, and find alot of caps/stems being eaten up. It pisses me off. Is there any way to avoid the weight of the mushrooms being depleted by them? Thanks!

How are they getting in the box to begin with? Baby drys her shrooms out in the open in front of a fan before putting them into a box with dry-right and she has not had any problems with maggots/flies.....

Never done it, but its a thought. You have a collander? put your shrooms in that and run water through it and shake it around a bit..Or mabye take the sprayer thing by the sink and spray out the gills...Just ideas...Don't know if their any good....

I've never tried it, but I bet putting them in the oven at a low temp, say 115-150, may make them wriggle their way out. Ya never know, it may work.

i remember reading a post that said if you blow air into the gills, all the insects pack their bags and leave. i've tried it and it does work. give it a shot?

Blowing air into the gills does work.
Also what I usually do is through all the shrooms in the sink for a while to get all the dirt off, this will probably get rid of the maggots.

This is what I do... (when I don't eat them fresh and want to dry 'em)

Set them in a cup of water for about 20 minutes. They all will drown and sink to the bottom. Then dry out the caps.

Put goodies in Blender with Everclear, turn on 'High', viola..... maggots vanish.

I spray any I find with a heavy coat of RAID. Also, if you can resist picking them the same day, you can hose them down with OFF, or another repellent, and pick another day. If you have the time, try gaurding them from insects from pinning till birthday, but you must not take your eyes off them. The chemical methods seem to add more visuals to the trip.

And, for the sake of the retarded and children under 12, this is the section where I add a serious suggestion...
Drowning them before does work pretty good too. Also, try drying with a small room heater on low power. The heated air kills 'em and they shrivel up and fall out of the shroom. This may damage potency to a degree though.

Mate see if you nip the stems off with your thumb nail when there fresh, put them on some non glossy cardboard like inside of a shoe box and dry them out with the tip of the cap facing towards the sky, maybe place a desktop lamp pointing down on them but don't make the room too hot, let them dry over 2 days and as the shrooms starts to dry up the maggots go in search of new food, when doing so they go onto the cardboard and it sucks all the moisture out it and becomes dried out and stuck to the cardboard, once yer mushies are dry pick them up and you can literally scrape a couple of tea spoons worth of maggots up off the cardboard!

Take care of your shrooms, there a bit like weed.. if you force dry them.. it's never going to be as good as if you let it do it naturally, when you hear about people getting gut rot, the shits ect feeling shitty after there trip that's the maggots that do that, the only time I feel like that is when I eat them raw while picking so best trying to remove the maggots, or if you make tea they should all float to the top and skim them off, hers a pic o some drying the way I described, hope I was some help, happy picking :smile:!

That makes sense.  Nicotine is a natural insecticide.  Many of the substances that humans enjoy for their psychoactive effects are toxic, repellent, or paralytic towards insects.  THC is another good example, as is caffeine.

If you suspect maggots and break one open after it already has begun the process of drying, does the damage to psylocin lessen with the less moisture present in the mushrooms? I guess I’m asking if bruising is less effective in destroying the psychoactive the dryer it gets.

From my experience maggots are only on the mushrooms that are past peak ripeness that are not fit for human consumption. Treat psychedelic mushrooms like any other food product, if you wouldn't eat them fresh, don't eat them dry.  That being said I doubt eating those little shroom maggots is going to bother you in the slightest. Slugs are another story and I believe them to be the cause of wood lover paralysis.

I’m down with eating a couple of bugs here and there, but upon opening some and then being housing units to a few or more after only popping up over night just seems like a lot.

I’m sure that anybody who’s eaten mushrooms in their lifetime, or literally any other produce, has definitely consumed some buggos but limiting the amount when there’s potentially one in any one that gets picked just seems  appealing.

I saw a post made by ToxicMan suggesting that if you eat a shroom with too many tunnels or too much presence of bugs that it could lead to illness, possibly.

If just the process of drying them out alone will eliminate the critters and soaking isn’t necessary, then cool, that’s obviously the easiest and least intrusive route. Thanks ya’ll.
