Substrate Recipe Version 2 ... please help
    #7201316 - 07/20/07 05:56 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

5 Pounds of Substrate:

75% Coir
10% Garden Gypsum
15% Cofee Grounds

Question is how much hydrated lime and algit kelp meal should be added to 5 pounds of substrate following this recipe?

What about worm castings? I think I read somewere that cofee grounds are an alternative to worm castings? Or does it provide a whole different nutrient to the subtrate?

Should anything else be added?

Add 2 teaspoons of kelp meal to that.

Worm castings can be used as bulk on its own. Its not anything like coffee. It has very little nitrogen in it, which is what you are using the Coffee for. The Coffee is to bump up N levels in the coir, since coir has little to no nitrogen.

Your substrate looks great. You shouldn't need Lime as long as you use 10% gypsum. If you want to add it though you will need a P.H. tester and you want a P.H. level of 7.5, 8 is OK too.

Start by adding 2 table spoons of lime and testing. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes after adding lime before testing each time.

Everything looks great. That should be a good substrate to get you started.
