Best drummer in your opinion?

I'm going to have to go with Neil Peart. That guy is a god on the drums. :drumming:

I vote for Hellhammer, from Mayhem. God like speed with the double bass pedal.

He's won awards for his skills:

Not sure but whoever is the best there is always someone better, and continues until the list is endless. I like the drummer from Death and I like myself the best i get on speed and go fast quicker and do what no one can do including you thus suffocating in glue

the drummer from NFG, hands down!

jk, umm probably shit, Idk.. Technical perfection is nice but all it's showing is how fucking machine like you are, but there are really good drummers.

Manowar's drummer I like and Dimmu Borgir's drummer

Manowar more so than dimmu borgir. Idk, drummers don't really get it to me or at least none that I can think of off hand. I've been to some drum circles where I'd isolate a group and jam off them but that's different. I'd consider some drum circle or african drummers fucking the best@!

Drummers that have impressed me live...

Greg Saunier (Deerhoof)
Zach Hill (Hella)
Josiah Wolf (Why?)
Benjamin Weikel (The Helio Sequence)

I second Greg Saunier definitely. I've been meaning to check out Deerhoof live one of these days. I love his spastic style.

Props.

Also, any serious discussion must mention Buddy Rich and Max Roach.

My pick is Elvin Jones.

And yall, these picks like the drummer for Tool or 311 or Sublime or RHCP and so on. Those picks suck.

They main thing that Tool and 311 have in common is they both suck and they both have fans who, amusingly, take the music seriously.

Riiiiiiiiiiight

I'm sitting here recommending the drummer from the Coltrane Quartet and I get called a troll. It's sad how hostile people are against being educated. If it was Sabbath and Zep yall were on about at least you would be at the source. Tool? Goddamn, why can't you choose a band that takes it to the next level.

Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were good...maybe they were the best in their time, but that was a long time ago.

Technically skilled drummers are boring? Since when did drummers have to have no skill...it's easy for someone to say such a thing about an instrument, when they don't know jack shit about it in the first place.

Danny Carry, John Bonham, Tim "Herb" Alexander, Brain Mantia, and the grandfather of badass drumming - Terry Bozzio.

There's lots of other great ones, those are just my favorites.

Yes, don't forget Herb as long as we're mentioning drummers like Danny Carey and Jimmy Chamberlain.

I listen to a lot of 70's stuff so that includes a lot of fusion and progressive rock.

Zappa always had great drummers, well from the mid 70's on anyway. Most have been mentioned but Chester Thompson and Chad Wackerman have not. I recently saw Wackerman play with Alan Holdsworth and he has become less machine-like with the years, in a good way.

Here's a video showing Chester Thompson playing with Zappa on Inca Roads. He has such a natural, funky feel. Thompson also played with Weather Report and Genesis. This video is a showcase of ultra disciplined and rehearsed musicians playing strangely beautiful music. It also has some claymation by Bruce Bickford in the middle, which sort of obscures the song, but it's cool to see.

Check out the last minute if nothing else for some really creative drumming/percussion:

Billy Cobham is a drummer probably still unsurpassed in his power combined with a breadth of ability. Here he is playing material from the first Mahavishnu Orchestra recording. The whole tune is great and in this recording he is going off pretty much the whole time, watch Cobham especially from about 8:30 to the end of the video:

Narada Michael Walden was the other drummer who played with Mahavishnu Orchestra and though he was no Cobham, he certainly held his own and brought something extra to the group I think. I can't find any good video of him doing his thing; download the song 'Cosmic Strut' for some awesome, funky fusion drumming.

Bill Bruford. Two of my favorite bands, King Crimson and Yes have this drummer to thank for much of their awesomeness. Probably the most rebellious drummer of all time. Here's a video of him with Crimson doing some Brufordesque stuff, and making an excellent point about polyrhythmic music at the end:

And I don't know what he's up to since leaving The Mars Volta, but Jon Theodore is one of the best drummers ever (and I hope he returns to the Volta). Just pure, unshakable power. I can't find any good footage but just listen to him play on Haunt of Roulette Dares or Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus or Tetragrammaton.

And let's not forget the great Stewart Copeland, ok? Master of hi-hat and octoban lovemaking and drop-beat rock. Not much to see in this video but you can still hear the magic:
