n00b-Are my BRF cakes contaminated? (pics in post)
    #7182592 - 07/16/07 09:25 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hello! This is allot of firsts for me. I'm a long time lurker. First time posting & my first attempt at cultivation.
I'm using the PFtek for BRF cakes. The strain is P.Atlantis ATL#7 (from the exceptionally wonderful people at SporeWorks. Big thumbs up to those guys!). We were paranoiac about keeping everything sterile during inoculation, but they don't look like the pictures I've seen of cakes at this stage.
The Following pictures are 11 days after inoculation & they are pics of the inoculation points. The tek we watched suggested keeping the temperature between 78F-86F. On average they have been colonizing at 84F. I've read about metabolites & suspect maybe thats what this is but I would like a more experienced opinion. The color is kind of like a coffee stain on Khaki pants surrounded by the ropey white of mycelium.
The first 3 are pics of 3 different jars. The 4th one is a close up of the 3rd at the inoculation point.

And the close up...

Ive seen some pictures of fully colonized P.Atlantis and they don't seem to look the same as other types of mushrooms. So in a nutshell; is this normal looking? Or is it contaminated?
Any diagnoses or suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I'll be happy to provide any more info or pics. Thanks for reading my post!

that doesn't look too great, kinda slimy

could be metabolites but they usually look a bit different than that. wait for an opinion from RR, he'll tell you the deal.

Yeah, and the metabolites, at least in my experience, don't show up until the jar is over colonized, which that one is not. But he's right, someone else can shed more light on this.

You don't see many Atlantis cake grows, so most cubensis growers are going to be alarmed by the appearance of your jars. They looks perfectly normal for this species. The brownish/yellow tint to the mycelium is normal. You are incubating them a bit on the high side, so if you start seeing drops of yellowish fluid collecting in your jars, lower the temp.

The cake tek was designed with cubensis in mind so its remains to be seen if Atlantis will do well on BRF. You should get some sclerotia but fruiting might be limited. Good luck!

The closeup picture is great, you can even see the tunnel made by the syringe.

Thank you for the replies. I lowered the temp a little their now around 76F. I figure I will keep letting them colonize and see what happens. You bring up a good point Workman, perhaps Atlantis wasn't the best choice for my first BRF cake grow. We'll see how they do. I have 3 other syringes to experiment with - Psilocybe azurescens Hammond Strain, Psilocybe mexicana Strain-B and Psilocybe weilii. Seeing that none of these are cubensis, did I f**k up? I was planning on trying casings after getting ckes to grow. I suppose I might push that ahead of schedule.

Uh, yeah. All of those are intermediate to advanced species. Not the best choices for your first attempts. I suggest searching the forums for those exact species to get an idea of what is required. You seem to be doing pretty well so far and at least you are likely to get some sclerotia with your Atlantis attempt. The Mexicana B should produce sclerotia in a casing even if it fails to fruit for you. The azurescens is best outdoors and the weilii, well, there isn't much to say about that one. The weilii is real slow to produce mushrooms and most people experience contamination before the 60 day wait for pins occurs. Depending on your climate you might consider some outdoor beds. Good luck!

When I did my grow, a few of my jars looked exactly like that. I asked around and a few people told me it was bacteria. But it didn't quite look like "the wet spot".

I separated those jars from the others to see how they would do. When they reached 100% colonization, it seemed like the mycelium was taking over those spots...and soon after they were not visible anymore. The cakes produced mushrooms that blew me away.

Cool, thanks for the encouraging words. When I saw all those different strains I was like a kid in a candy store. Bought what looked most delicious and didn't look back :crazy2:!

Well....everything at this point is a learning experience. And even if they all fail I've at least tried. And try and try again & again I will!!
& Good Luck to you sir:mushroom2:

Thanks for the positive vibes. I'll continue to watch and wait. I'm pretty confident at this point that I can succeed at cultivating some cubensis. I'm going to order some golden teachers and some treasure coast.
