Will This Agar Work? $53 shipped for 2 pounds!

Hey all,
I wanted to get into some agar work and found a 2 pound container for $53 shipped. Its from nutritiongeeks.com
http://www.nutritiongeeks.com/details2.asp?Prod=agar-agar-now-2oz&Prodgp=agar-agar-now&gclid=CP-xobKHso0CFRpohgodQ1G-tg
Will this work if I use some potatoes to make a PDA solution?
Is this an okay deal?
Does anyone know a cheaper substitute? Seems like a good deal for me.
Any help appreciated.

Two Pounds?!?
Go for the two-ounce package, I think. But hey- it's your money. That's the right stuff, at least. And you can use potatoes, or the modern-era shortcut: potato flakes.

agar is way overrated IMHO. Just make up a broth from potatoes or honey or Karo or Dextrose or combine the above. That way you can see a three dimensional view of the culture development and as an extra... You can suck it up in a syringe!

The 2-D thing is a feature, not a bug. You can make sure to get a pure section, contam-free. Once you have that, LC is the way to go.

You have no idea what agar is used for do you? It is used to have a 2d growth so you can Clearly see The different things/strains growing in it and making it very easy to separate them If you just want to suck up random genetics go ahead but if you want to pick out the most riz/fast growing you are going to need agar. But wow 2 pounds will last you forever.

I know exactly what agar is used for thank you. I just think it's a pain in the ass. I'd rather shoot up a jar of broth with a multispore nock than have to prepare agar, cool agar to just the right temperature, pour a bunch of agar, lift the lids on an agar culture and pray its sterile, and then guess which mycellium will be the best. This ain't rocket science.

agar is not such the pain in the ass as you make it out to be, it has processes that have to be done just like multispore LC, and you dont have to gamble on genitics like with multi spore, once you get some good genitics it is worth the little bit of extra time by far,

lol the way you just stated "shroom" would just basically be a weird lc and good luck separating a dirty print or isolating strains on that.

Actually grow the mushroms from a multispore inoculation. Pick the one that has the characteristics you want to continue into the future. Take a piece of that shroom with any of a dozen methods already posted. Inject it into your prepared liquid culture. When it 'germinates' suck it up and do multiple inoculations.
VS.
Prepare an agar culture. sterilize the culture and make sure you pour it while it's still hot (in a sterile glove box or similar) Open the agar culture again under sterile conditions and transfer to...
If you've got a glove box or a laminar hood or even a HEPA filter go for it....I just think it's a PITA. Just my opinion.

lmao you are so stuck on how hard agar is
mix agar 60 seconds pc take it out let it sit on table for a few min, lol "this is getting hard" pour
done
when it is time to put spores/tissue on thre just use a plastic tub " still air box" there is no need for hepa filters/ect
i have even used a trash bag to do it in once when i was not at my house

agar is cake really it is so simple. And what you mentioned is cloning which can basically be avoided when working with agar since you can fruit it on agar and test characteristics that you want/isolate that strain.

It sounds like you're getting what it's used for, but not why it's preferred. Multispore inocs to agar will yield selectable strains. LC will yield a monoculture goo.

I'm sorry, I just got pissed when somebody said I had no idea what agar was used for. Agar is cool, just something else to have to buy and deal with. How many of you have a "superstrain" you isolated on agar? With that said, I'll shut up.

I've heard some people having issues with food-grade agar not remaining solid at room temps very well...

Not me, not yet. For cloning from a grow, I plan to use LC, like you said. But I'm also hoping to capture some wild specimens, Shaggy Manes, and agar will be required for that. So... someday.
