Kettle
    #7198629 -

In a video from mushroomgrowing.com the mycologist is using a kettle to sterilize the jars. He puts 1 layer of lids on the bottom then covers them with alluminum foil, after he puts another layer of lids then the jars on top to keep the water from touching the jars.  Im wondering if this is a good way to sterilize. I have no pressure cooker at the time. Should the water be touching the jars?>This confuses me,wont it evaporate? If anyone knows what the hell Im talking about please get at me Im excited to start but do not want to screw up. Thank:confused:s!

Interesting.

It seems like it would have some effect, but I believe a pressure cooker would work more efficiently. Although, if this works alright, I can go ahead and start growing!

you can sterilize brf jars in an ordinary pot. just put a piece of wood or cloth under the jars so they won't crack. use a lid on the pot. fill the pot with water so that the jars will be half way in the water. let the pot come to a slow boil and then leave it thus for an hour. when done, just turn the heat off and let the pot with the jars cool off.

Should I put a plate over the top of the jars so they do not boil to the top and cause it to fall off?

yeah, something heavy so they won't move around while boiling. the water shouldn't be over the jars anyway but cover the inoculation wholes with tape and put a layer of foil over it.

What is the point of having holes dilled on the bottom of the terrarium if it is sitting flat on a surface, like the floor?

You're supposed to have it elevated so air can circulate under it. Just set it on some blocks or PVC pipe.

As the video showed, elevate the jars completely out of the water. This prevents it from splashing up and under the foil, then getting into the jars. The steam will sterilize the brown rice flour cakes, but you'll need a kettle with a nice fitting lid.

As soon as the water boils, turn down the stove to the minimum setting that will keep the water boiling. This will make your water last longer. Check on it after an hour, you might need to add a glass or two of water to keep from boiling dry. I recommend 90 minutes, but don't start counting the time until steam is beginning to escape from the lid and you turn the stove down.

That was my video from the sounds of it. Roadkill did the mixing and most of the talking on the brf tek section.

Yes, lift the lid as needed to check/add water to prevent boiling dry. The jars aren't going to cool off in the few seconds it takes to check the water.

I am also going to use 2 layers of jar lids with alluminum foil as showed in the video, should I double up the foil? Also I am going to let them cool overnight in the kettle is that allright? Is there a sign to tell when the jars are fully de-contaminated. Once again sorry for the stupid questions.
