Casing is when you take a colonized (full of mycelium) media (grain, PF tek cakes or other) and mix it with soil/vermiculite/sand mixture. Basically you lay down a 1" or so layer in the bottom of a tray or container. Then 1-2 inches of your colonized media. Then another 1 inch or less layer of casing mixture on top. Since most mushrooms grow in forest etc this simulates a natural environment. You need to do this step to make the mushrooms fruit (grow into mushrooms from the mycelium stage). This is a really simplified explanation. Try getting some books at the library or better yet buy a book by Paul Stamets, a profesional mushroom cultivator.

hey an easier idea is to look to your left of this web page there should be a little button called grow/find look under growing mushrooms then casing

if you do not see a bar on the side of this web page with a bunch of buttons type in this url: www.shroomery.org/

Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see

So, are you saying that instead of growing on the cake that forms inside of the jar itself, I should take the formed cake and crumble it up? Then lay down a layer? I'll do this, and it seems like a workable idea, I just don't want to destroy a still viable cake unless this is a more productive growing medium. Seems to make sense though, and as spores are microscopic I don't imagine there would be any damage, right.
