Do they exist? If not can someone teach me how to build a sweet fan/desicant chamber combo?

Heat would be fine if the desicant/fan combo dryer takes significantly more time than a food dehydrator does. Because you get oxidizatyion no matter what.
Can anyone tell me how long the desicant/fan combo takes vs. a Food Dehydrator?

thought i heard desicant was used to keep them dry...not to actually dry them.
and a fan vs dehydrator....dehydrator wins every time

Dehydrator is the best choice. I personally use a small 10 inch box fan to dry em out for about a day or 2 and then throw em in a jar w/ dririte to suck that last little bit of moisture out, a dehydrator still takes about a full day or 2, depending on the dehydrator i guess.
But also most dehydrators have an option to turn the heat off... but thats not necessary and that would just make it an expensive fan, so go buy a fan....

I think he means if your not going to use the heat setting on your dehydrator you might as well just use a fan setup. But my dehydrator beats fan drying any day, faster and quieter.

go buy a stack of paper furnace filters, a box fan and some bungee cords.
take two filters, and lay food to be dehydrated on top of the second filter. when full, place a new filter on top and repeat until you're out of food. Then place two more filters over the top of that and bungee cord it to the fan. Place the fan on low somewhere were it can get fresh air (dehydrating raises the RH of the room, fresh air is needed to balance that) and come back in six hours.
You can make everything from beef jerky to cracker dry dehydrated shrooms this way. Fruit rollups pose a problem though, heh. Seriously though, this does work, it was even featured on that good_eats show on foodtv...

The heat from a food dehydrator will not ruin your mushrooms, there are plenty of people here who use them. The nesco snack master seems to be the most popular
