Perlite question
    #7197896 - 07/19/07 01:20 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

The only Perlite I've been able to find locally (and I've searched three stores) has micronutrients added. Is this okay or am I just asking for contamination from the nutes?

you should be able to rinse it really well prior to use, in hopes of removing the nutrients, which i imagine would cut down on any unforeseeable problems.

if you have enough FAE you wont have to worry about contaminates.

If its the 'miracle grow' brand I would recommend against it. The last 2 bags I got of that brand were full of sand at the bottom!

Not what I'd call a good deal.

I've gotten some dirty, not even remotely white, nasty perlite in bags before. Whatever, I got the bottom of the barrel, so to speak. Since you're going to be rinsing it well before using it, i wouldn't worry about it.

(You rinse it out well to get rid of the dirt and dust which gunks it up and soaks up our precious water and doesn't release it as easily as the crystalize structure of the perlite itself would)

If it has nutes try rinsing with bleach that should remove em just make sure to rinse well after too...best thing would be to find a better supplier of it though.

Thanks for all the help guys. The experimental side of me is going to use 2 gallon jars and two cakes to test it. I've got enough older 'clean' perlite to use in something that small and compare the two.
