According to the Wiki entry for Sphagnum, they appear to be the same thing.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphagnum

"Decayed, compacted Sphagnum moss has the name of peat moss."

Just under that it mentions that sphagnum peatmoss is used for growing mushrooms...

"Peat moss is also a critical element for growing mushrooms; mycelium grows in compost with a layer of peat moss on top, through which the mushrooms come out, a process called pinning."

once you have the two of them in your hand at the big-box store it'll probably be easier to understand but sphagnum moss is too bulky, the spaces between it are way to huge and it can't be colonized as readily. Even when shredded...

Beyond that, I don't know, my orchids love it as a substrate, mushrooms...not so much.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

OK I figured out the difference for anyone interested.

Old decayed Sphagnum moss is referred to as Sphagnum Peat moss or Peat. Thats what we want.

Coir is nutritious, casing layers that are nutritious can cause overlay. That's the big reason why coir isn't a good casing layer... of course a lot of people still swear by it

nutes in the casing layer don't cause overlay.....over colonization and overlay are 2 different things.Reason that allot of people dont use coir is because allot of the casing material doesn't get fully colonized this leaves open nutes to molds/bacteria.
