Shredding dung & staw
    #718857 - 07/02/02 08:11 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Not that it matters to some --- BUT;

In the saga of pursueing compost pellets:

You had better have some BIG HORSEPOWER behind any shredder you use to shred 3 cubic yards of fresh dairy cow compost & 7 cubic yards of wheat straw.

Because one under 10 horsepower gave up the ghost, before it shedded 3 combined yards of the mix. LOL, the guy at the rental place wasn't happy when his dead shredder was brought back to him.

It seems that dried fecal matter & wheat straw is tougher that shit. If that makes any sense?

Strange day. And, it is not even a full moon.

you don't need to shred anything if you're preparing compost...and btw you can shred it when done before pasteurizing, more easy since the material is soft...

He plans on producing pelts with this material.

Btw, SixTango, at the peletizing process, depending on the system, much heat is produced, so you might have the pasteurisation already combined with the peletizing action.

Anno, you are correct (as usual ). A high pressure extrusion process creates a considerable amount of heat. Anyway, a small test batch of 1/4 inch diameter pellets is now in hand. This is beginning to look promising. They hold up good & smell sort of like hay. The only draw back is that about 3 cubic feet of pellets weighs 50 pounds. So shipping would add considerable cost to an end user. As the Racoon?s time allows, he is going to tinker with these pellets & see how well they colonize, so on & so forth. Then, if a select few want to test them (?), I will ship a few small samples around to folks willing to do a grow log on them. Below is what they look like. SixTango

It would be great if one could use those only by adding warm water to the pelets.
Perhaps also using some peroxide in the water?

Substrate Pellets composition is about 15% Lignin, 30% Cellulose, 27% Hemicellulose, 3.5% Nitrogen & 7% ash.

The Raccoon is going to just try a batch that is hydrated with sterile (distilled) water & another that is wet pasturized to compare the differant results. Probobly in half full quart jars to start & used collonized millet as spawn. If that goes well, then a bulk application -- next .

The little buggers really swell when hydrated. The volume increases almost 60%. The smell isnt to unpleasant either, when wet pasturized on a stove top, in a pot. Of course, there is a high volume fan & vent pulling most of the odor outside.

The Substrate Pellet saga goes on.

Great idea Anno (as usual ). Will try that also. Matter of fact, they could be dry pasturized in a stove and/or just nuked. One would have to watch the temps, these little buggers would catch fire & burn -- if one got them to hot. SixTango
