Whole Brown Rice
    #7197277 - 07/19/07 11:15 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I had a tiny tiny amount of spores left, so I wanted to go ahead and try whole brown rice.

Materials:

One pint Ziplock Twist N Lock - $2
Mahatma Brown Rice - $1
Two bandaids - Free
Fine Vermiculite - $5 at Lowes

I rinsed the brown rice off multiple times in warm water. I then cooked it on the stove until it was tender, and then strained it. I rinsed and strained a few extra times.

While this was cooking, I took a knife and carved a hole in the lid, big enough to stick the syringe in, right in the middle. This will act as a vent during the sterilization process and as an inoculation point. If you try to punch a nail through, it will break the lid, as it is plastic. I filled the container about 1/2 of the way up, put the lid on, and microwaved it on and off to help sterilize it, maintaining a good boil. I then dumped out this water and kept it in the microwave for storage.

I filled the container up 3/4 of the way with brown rice, added water until about 1-2MM of visible water pooled at the bottom, and then filled it nearly to the top with dry verm.

I stuck in the microwave, and let it "pressure" cook until the standing water was gone. It probably took a total of about 6 minutes. The vent hole at the top has to be big enough to allow enough steam out, but small enough to maintain a decent amount of pressure.

I stuck a bandaid over the hole, let it cool for a day, shot it up, and then put a new bandaid over.

Since I only had a very very small amount of spores left, and I shot it right down the middle, it took about a week and a half before I saw anything. I also did a control pint the same way, but with no inoculation. There is no visible sign of contams in either one, and I am getting really good myc growth now.

Roughly how long should it take? I think it should take longer than BFR because the grain is whole, and I used such a small amount of spores.

I am surprised you got any growth at all, but, back on topic, expect full colonization between probably 2 adn 4 weeks. Good luck.

Why is that? 9er's tek had something similar. I was surprised because I wasn't sure there were enough spores in the syringe.

Colonizing whole grains is fairly easy, most cubes will take to almost any grain if prepared right. I have heard about whole rice 'cakes', but they were of little nutrients I suppose and provided weak flushes and potency. If used as bulk spawn though I'm sure it's just as good as anything else.

If you are able to shake it, your colinization times thould be greatdly reduced.

keep up the experiments

i just kinda figured that cooking the whole rice would make it mushy, as cooked rice isn't overly rigid. Apore is right about shaking though, it helps a lot if you can shake it one good time along the way.

9er's tek said to put the verm on the top, so I am not sure shaking it would be a good idea. I don't want any contams dropping in. In hindsind, it would have been better to use a Tyvek barrier instead.

As far as being mushy goes, once it dries out a little, it stays fairly firm.

Here is a pic of my whole brown rice jar. It was inoculated with my last 1 and 1/2 cc of Brazilian strain. I believe the jar is about a pint. I used the steaming method in a pot to sterilize because I have no pressure cooker. It is about 80% colonized. It has been 3 weeks since inoculation. Sorry for poor quality I used a camera phone for the pic.

Bob,

My jar is now fully colonized. Total time close to 4 weeks.
