I'm wanting to shred a lot of horse manure. I'm wondering how to easily shred it. Would a wood chipper be good?
I realize that there are easy ways to shred small amounts, but I want to easily shred alot. Any methods?

only problem I see w/ your approach is that the manure could clog or muck up the motor/chipper.

well, if you were going to use a wood chipper, it would have to be a top loaded one, commonly referred to as a "tub grinder," and relatively small, as you aren't really "chipping" the poo, but rather breaking it into smaller clumps. As to what would be ideal for shredding large amounts... dunno, let me think about it.

the only way I know how is to grab a soil rake and a bunch of drinking water or gatorade and go to town.

the manure isn't really going to clog the chipper, provided it is properly dry. What would be really ideal for the project would be a concrete crusher set to "crush and run" size. Feel like dropping 70 large?

If you are shredding fairly dry nuggets then a shredder is excellent. I shred dry field collected stuff in mine and it comes out beautifully.
I did have some stuff that I had already made wet, probably a bit more than field capacity, from before I had the shredder.
All I can say is DO NOT shred wet stuff!! It makes a nasty mess that stops resembling horse poo and clogs the whole thing up. If you do have slightly wet stuff mix it in with more than 3 times the amount of dry and that seems to work.

you could go with this: http://www.taylorrental.com/item_detail.asp?id=45
they also have gas applications if electrical is not feasible.

I use a box screen that I made with screen mesh and 2x4's...
I lay that on top of a wheel barrel...
and sift the horse manure though the screen.
warning...don't use too small of a mesh screen!~
mine looks a little like this one...

I'm currently in the market for a small shredder/chipper for this exact reason. Just one of the little 2HP ones that aren't designed to do anything larger than 1.5" branches and leaves.
Just put a bucket under it, throw compost/shit down it's throw and collect it on the other end. I've seen other's do this before with their shit beforehand and trust me, it really makes breaking it up by hand look so pitiful.
As for the compost screener that roadkill showed, here's something that I'd like to build for myself, for my own composting...

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
