Mushbox... 8 Choices, which one to choose?
    #7192687 - 07/18/07 02:58 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Some big, some small. Some cheap, some pricey. Some plug in, others don't.

I'm gonna be a first time grower once I buy one of the mushroom kits, so which one should I choose?

I guess omit the last two, because their over $200.

So buying a kit is not worth it, you just suggest diving head first into mushroom growing without ANY prior knowledge about it? Seems like a lot can go wrong, even in the basic cultivation guides...

I haven't heard from that site, but azarius.nl has some great grow boxes for reasonable prices. Check them out(and the comments)

First, I think it's fun to do it like they said above, buy the separate items and do it yourself. But- some people have more money than time, and a kit makes some sense if you are one of those who can't go browsing around garden shops and thrift stores.

I haven't shopped for mushroom kits, but it's been my general experience in life that you are going to be happier and more successful if you buy the full kit the first time. Don't monkey around with it, buy the top of the line.

That kind of sounds like me. Not that I have a lot of money, but I'd rather spend twice as much and have it all set up and put together, rather than travel store to store, buying separate ingredients and things, putting it together, mixing it up and what not, and hoping everything turns out alright.

My thumb isn't green either.

Yep, if that's your style, you should do it that way. And definitely write it up for the rest of us to read!

no need to travel "store to store". Walmart has everything you need. Usually all close together too.

My Walmart had most of what I needed (no verm)- but I saved A LOT of money by going to Goodwill, and the local garden center.

I'm not going to copy and paste the whole list of materials, but it includes jars, vermiculite, plexiglass and aquarium, plastic syringes, wire mesh and micro curved cuticle scissors. Am I supposed to walk up to someone working there with this shopping list?

Richii -

I can personally guarantee your satisfaction with one of Mushbox's mushroom kits. It is our intention to provide our customers with a complete out of the box setup with online instructions and technical support from our forums at www.shroomtalk.com or here at the Shroomery. Mushbox also offers discounts for Shroomery members including 5% any order and random freebies.

Some people bash kits because they prefer to do the hard work themselves and that is very admirable. If you are looking to avoid all the research and labor then a kit is what you want.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

I will direct a couple questions to you then, can you outline the dimensions of the The Myco-101 Starter Kit and the The MYG Mushroom Growing Kit?

Also, from reading the MYG Instructions, it seems a heating source is required but not supplied, is this correct?

PM? No, ask and answer here, please. Then we can refer people to this thread when they ask in the future. And who knows- you might make a sale to one of us, too.

Fuck yes! Walk up to the long-haired, hippy-lookingest individual you can find, and hand him the list.

Or just browse around.

WTF is a micro-curved cuticle scissors?  I have never used something like that.

All you need to start is a incubator, fruiting chamber, and substrate.
For an incubator, you need 2 rubermaid bins of whatever size you want and a fishtank heater.

For a fruiting chamber you need another rubermaid tub, a light, and a source of humidity.  The source of humidity can be a cool mist humidor or just cover the "floor" of the tub with perslite and some water with hydrogen peroxide.  The light can be anything.  you can get one of those tap-lights and just stick it on the underside of the cover and turn it on every time you open he fruit chamber to mist.

Fr substrate, there are a lot of choices.  PF cakes are probably the easiest.  just get some brown rice flower and vermiculite.  If you are overly concerned about sterilization for your first time, you can always order some pres-sterelized bags.

wallmart has ALL these things.  But if you time is worth more to you than the money youo would save by getting the stuff on your own, then go for the kit.

You act like the basic pf tek or rye tek is rocket science *rolls eyes*. You could spend $100 and EASILY make over $1,000 in mushrooms from shit at walmart and a local feed store... minus the spore syringe. Guess you haven't read much. Mushroom growing kits are never worth it... or at least I've never seen one worth it yet.

I've spent about $100, including spores.
(plus another 60 for books, and I still want to get RR's videos)

But that doesn't figure time and gas. If I had to count the time I've spent going to different stores, searching around, etc... $200 wouldn't be a bad deal to get everything all at once.

And if the kit works well, who cares? Like you said, it's thousands of dollars worth of payout for the investment, whether 100 or 200.
