That seems to be more geared towards using horse manure, and RR also says it's overkill if you are putting it a terrarium, which I would do. My question is, since this is my first grow, do you think it would be ok to crumble just one jar, do verm on the bottom, substrate, and just plain verm casing on the top, and then the rest I would just do as cakes? Also, here is an update, 7 days from inoculation.

that's kinda what I said. I mean, you can crumble and case the cakes with 50/50 verm and peat moss (easily found), but I was suggesting using them as spawn for a coir substrate, which I think would give you more food for more mushrooms. You can also case coir with 50/50, but some have said coir will contam after a while, so I was suggesting the wax paper, as it's less likely to hold contams since you change it every few days.

and the wax paper thing isn't just for hpoo. RR suggested that I use it for coir when I mentioned it in another thread. It may be overkill for a terrarium type FC, but it also depends on if your doing perlite or something else...

hell, I'm not 100% sure what I'm gonna do yet, so this is all just suggestions of things I have considered after studying other teks and methods people have used. I have two quart jars almost fully colonized, two pint jar cakes I innoc-ed two days ago with two different LCs to see if they were contaminated or not (nothing so far...), and the stuff to make a RR style FC. I'm tempted to hit the thrift stores and such for humidifiers and set up an automated FC, but I don't know if that's how I want to go yet.

so take my advice with a grain of salt. I was just suggesting the method I did because it seems like an easy way to up your yields.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I like to mix coco coir and verm... but that would be fine. Although doing a casing with a 1/2 pint jar might leave you with a VERY VERY thin substrate layer which will deminish results... but it's your call man. i'd probably just leave em as cakes and if I wanted to do casings use RR's rye tek... or any other rye/wbs tek. I <3 rye

that's why I was suggesting doing it in a small container, like a cool whip tub sized or a bit larger (I have an 8 or 10 inch round ziplock container I was envisioning if I were to do this), and using the cake as spawn for a coir substrate. That way he gets the benefits of a bulk substrate but on a small enough scale that he's not sacrificing more than one jar on experimentation. If for some reason it goes badly, he's not out much.

Ah, I should of read you responce better. I'm used to using the bottom part of a distilled water container for my rye casings. I never thought about using anything smaller because I figured if I was going to do casings I'd just use quart jars of rye or wbs. But I see that you just recommended a smaller scale container and while it doesn't seem worth it to me to do the extra work for such a small casing, you would be able to do that and I guess it would be good to teach you the technique of it all incase he ever decided to move up to quart jars. I should of read better before I commented. My fault

Yeah, I mean, I have a very small container I could use to ensure the substrate layer is thick enough. I'm just wonder though, for one jar, if I did it correctly, if it would give me a higher yield then the cakes.
