Bags or Jars?
    #7188896 - 07/17/07 04:27 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Anyone want to help me list the pros and cons of jars and bags?

At first I was going to use bags becuase I could fit more and thought It would be cheaper. Turns out I'm gunna need an impulse seaer for 50.00 and I 14.00 for 20 bags.

How much does 24 Quart Jars run for?

I guess the other negative on jars is that it takes alot of effort(tyvek, cofee filters, tinfoil, ect.)

I want to go cheap but also effectibe so...

WHAT SHOULD I USE BAGS OR JARS?

cheapest would be jars since you can use em over and over and over again.24 quart jars should cost maybe 15 bucks max 20.Only reason i would go with bags is if you are growing pans since it is easier to work with.

Tyvek is next to zero effort what are you talking about..

Take a template like a 3.5in X 3.5in piece of tyvek then fold alot of it up can cut it bam you have like 10... repeat until you have like 1000 good to go.. whats so hard about grabbing a 3.5x3.5 piece of tyvek and slapping it on as your tighting the lid like you would have to regardless of tyveking it or not

Save money from impulse sealer and get a dishwasher for jars lol!!

i find all the little things that you call "Effort" to be a fun way to kill time. This is a hobby, not a job.

I guess I should have reworded, its not really about the effort becuase this is a hobby

I just wanted to hear some opinions on why bags might be more effctive,

some things that came to mind were

-when you shake your grain jars will the tyvek get wet and contaminate? I know its a slim possiblity but it could happen correct?

-bags would be much easier to redristribute colinized grains and would in effect colonize the bag faster then a jar would?

-easier to fit in a PC?

just throwing ideas out there .... if jars were so much better why do people even bother with bags?

1) Your substrate should not be that wet. It should not be an issue. But contams can always happen to substrate with jars/bags/anything.

2) Bags = More to colonize then jars... more jars can make the same amount of substrate and are broken up in smaller proportions... so it should colonize just as fast, if not faster.

3) Buy a big PC to begin with. If you do a bunch of jars it will take up the same amount of room as bags anyway

4) Bags have their perks... some mushies grow so much easier and bigger on the poo then on the rye. More of a bulk type growing then rye/wbs jars. All in what you're looking for.

Quart jars are like 17 bucks for 12 here. Some things to look at though, you can find the sealers cheaper (ebay and thrift, or sometimes costco) and its something you only have to buy once. Jars are kinda messy, and it does get old cleaning and storing them. So if you got the money go for the bags, if you are worried about money, then get the jars. But they both have pros and cons, i don't think either really outweighs the other.

i used to use jars. I use pretty much all bags now. Reason why i like the bags is the amount of sub i can fit in there. I don't like to have to many jars around because i don't have the room for their storage. I dislike cleaning jars also, so i found bags to be useful. Also its a lot easier to fit bags in the PC because they can be molded and shaped a certain way and also you can sometimes fit more bags then jars in a PC.

Umm... i find mixing my sub really easy with bags vs jars. Jars are cheaper. I still use jars for LCs but thats about it.

man id always be afraid of the bags melting in the pc or getting snagged on something and ripping. can you just use a big ol' turkey bag with a twist tie or do you have to get the kinds with filters built in? if you can use a turkey bag i might look into it.

Freetree77, the bags you buy from mushie supply folks are made to handle the temperature of a PC or autoclave - that's why they sell them. A turkey bag might work fine, but it probably wouldn't be as cheap, unless you were only planning on using one. I wouldn't trust the seal of a twist tie, personally.

Quart jars here are 12 for under $10 at WalMart or any one of a dozen other places. Hardware stores often carry them, some grocery and natural food stores do, K-Mart should, not sure about home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot. My nearby WalMart even has several pressure cookers and a couple of bigger pressure canners, and sometimes has plastic lids. Buy jars once and you won't really need to replace them - you may want to just throw away any contammed jars, plus you should replace rusty lids/bands unless you go plastic, but that is really no big deal.

Both jars and bags have minor advantages, but I like jars and they are easily available locally, which is true just about everywhere, I think.
