How much would it cost for a set up to produce enough mushrooms for personal use?
What is the best strain to start off with?
Thanks!

order a grow bag, go to a reputable vendor. Theres a lot of beginner strains out there. Grab what ever you feel confortable growing.

I don’t really know what’s comfortable. What is comfortable to you?
I read the PF tek and wanted to make a terrarium and grow cakes. Is that what the bag is for?

I Just did a quick search and it looks like Panaeolus Cyanescens are the most potent out of the species that’s growable indoors (which is what I plan to do). I figure all go with those. What is the best one to get though, Australian?

If this is your first attempt at growing then you should probably stick with a cubensis strain instead of p.cyan. although more potent, p.cyan is more difficult to grow. cubensis is much more forgiving. for recommendations on a cubensis strain, check out the strain thread.

In my opinion you should start with a p. cubensis strain. My personal favorite is b+, very resistant to contams and a good producer with nice potency as well.
Go to the grow guides and read read read the teks.
Growing with cakes and a small fruiting chamber is very easy to do IMO and you shouldn't have much problem if you use the search function for specific questions and read all the teks you can.
Good luck

Go to lil' shop of spores and pick up the thailand three pack for like 27 bucks (you get three syringes and Three Strains Cheaply) Buy an aquarium on sale from a wal-mart or something (they're usually cheaper there) for like 15 bucks, or you can get a see through tub for about 7.00. Perlite probably 5 bucks for a bag, 12 1/2pint jars are like 8 dollars here or you could go to a thrift store and pick up a variety of them for probably around 1/3 the price, I don't think you should do that for your first grow though, if something goes wrong you will question the jars, or you may accidentaly buy the wrong kind, wide mouth is important for cakes.
So lets make this easier to read
spores 3 kind 3 strains that are easy to grow and very potent (according of course to some strain comparisons, I'm still sticking with the "a cube is a cube is a cube" theory. 27.00
Then a Clear Rubbermaidesque tub (actually rubbermaid trademark will cost you extra, find one thats says something like "roopermayde" or some knock off. 7.00
Brown rice flour - (I get it for like 1.00 a lbs from the Organic section although i hear grinding it yourself is cheaper and better, but its not my thing and i like the quality i used to get already so i don't) 3.00 (i'm pretty sure 3 lbs will be enough for 12 1/2 pint jars)
a package of 12 half-pint jars (skinny tall ones or wide ones won't matter, however the lids of the short and stubby wide ones can be used on pint sized and quart sized jars, so i'd get them) 8.00
Vermiculite bag 9.00 (we pay too much for vermiculite here - unless you buy in superbulk)
Perlite 5.00
Jiffy Mix to Case 5.00
Tupperwear to case Ranges
argh... my wrist hurts now, carpal tunnel, i am typing too much... so simple answer, For me it cost around 80.00 to get started, However I've dumped lots more in with the excitement of improving my gear over time.

I had good luck with Amazonian strain of Ps. cubensis from Sporeworks.
I've spent about $100. That includes a PC, dehydrator, everything. You could probably for it for less, but you'd have to work at it. My first flush from my first small trays was about 8 grams dry. Second flush is in progress right now.
