Cakes Producing Nothing
    #7186931 - 07/17/07 07:19 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

My first grow has stalled.

I successfully grew 3 cakes, birthed 2, dunked, rolled, and had mycelium grow out beyond the verm layer.
I did not cold shock it, meaning i didn;t put it in the fridge.
I am using a RR f/c, with moist perlite.
I am using a cambodian cubensis strain from hawkeye.

My grow log is in that portion of the forum.

My cakes have produced no pins, but i think i have knots. I have had advers onditions lately, i had a temperature drop recently, and some misting was done to my cakes directly, causing some damage.

I have sought advice fom a few users, it's been expressed to me that my methods are fine, but something else could be up.
I know his hoby is a lot about patience and perseverance, so i puchased more spores fom a diffeent vendor for another go, but i'd like to know if there's something specific holding these back, or something i could ocrrect for my next run.

The humidity in my f/c is hard to keep up above 75%.
Thee is plenty of fae, i think it's robbing my moisture.
the temp is right around 75 degrees, and holds steady, with it going up and down with the rise and fall of the day's temps.

Any ideas?
I'd like to see these guys pop out something.

I have been told tha it could be inviable spores, but is it possible for bad spores to grow a mycelium that produces nothin?

Inviable spores would produce nothing at all,you have to get your humidity up,what are you using, just perlite ??

should i just dunk? am i being hasty? should i wait? should i cold shock? should i abort? Should i add a humidifier to my f/c to try to get the humidit up to 92-100%?

everyhere i look, it's different depending on the situation

When I was using cakes I tried adding a cool mist impeller type humidifier to my FC. Absolutely amazing results, basically took care of fanning and humidity for me. I ran mine 24/7 with cakes and on a timer system with my casings. Best investment i've made other than my PC.

Peace

I think I'm gonna try that too! My humidity stays at 85-90.. but I need it higher by far

i will be increasing my wet perlite to 5 solid inches when i get home today. I have maybe 3- 3.5 inches now. If that does not work, i will be installing a cool mist, and making a tek.

I simply taped up most of the holes in my RR style FC then attached a half foot plastic tube to bring it to my FC.  I didn't use a tek but I was trying to do this without modding my humidifier.  I'll try and find my old pictures of it to give you some ideas.

and

Sorry for the quality, on my ancient camera. .  Hope it helped.

Peace

In my experience the perlite functions best when soaked and then allowed to drain very well... might help if it's failing to release humidity due to being waterlogged, something to consider before investing in a coolmist, which I never had to bother with for tubs of any sort.

Ok this sounds very familiar to me. got some GT and Ecuador spores from same vendor. the Ecuador's have produced some but my GTs have mycelium growth but no pins, no knots, nothing but fully colonized cakes.

so i added a Sunbeam cool mist ultrasonic from Walgreens 30 bucks. hooked up and my Ecuador's fruited like crazy but still nothing on my GTs. They been in the chamber for a week now

Followed the brf/verm RR tek exactly. FAE 3 times a day. good temps. and now with the humidifier excellent humidity. its on every 2 hrs for 30 mins. my FC has the holes in it so if im not able to FAE as much as i like i believe it will be OK

good to hear i'm not the only one looking for answers to this dilemma.

where are our experienced myco-hobbyists?

my perlite is not waterlogged, it's just moist. i htought maybe an overabundance of water had affected my evaporation rate, and diminished the evaporation or something, butit's really not waterlogged. I mist 2x a day, real well, to compensate, but it rarely gets above 70%.

The beaty of the rr shotgun f/c was that it was supposed to be elatively easy, and needed no real mods

I have about 3 1/2 inchs of perlite now, i am oging to increase to 5, and see if htere is any noticeable difference.

If not, i will hafta modify, i have no choice.

Unless some experienced peoples wanna step in hee nad clue me in on something i may be missing.....
