Casing Questions. Can't Put My Finger on It.
    #7185234 - 07/16/07 09:05 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok here we go correct me as I go along:

I've been comparing notes from successful people that I have PM'd.

I've read the 50/50+ Casing Tek
http://www.shroomery.org/54/50-50-Casing-Tek

and the Casing 101
http://www.shroomery.org/50/Casing-101
  • I would like to know if any new light has been shone upon the use of the moist Vermiculite layer at the bottom of the 50/50 casing Tek.

  • Is this bottom Verm layer worth while or contaminant city?

Some people say to mix the Casing Materials Dry then bake them....

  • After Mixing the Peat and Verm Dry, do you also mix in the Calcium Carbonate before baking at 350 degrees for 35 minutes?

  • Or do you mix the Peat and Verm - Then Bake.
Then add in the Calcium Carbonate hydrate and then case?

  • Or do you mix the Peat-Verm-Calcium Carbonate dry, then moisten and then continue with the Sterilization steps which is baking at 350 degrees for 35 minutes?

I've read so many different ways I'm just confused.
My last casing turned out okay after I fought off my first battle with Cobweb.

The above casing was plain old Jiffy Mix baked for 20 mins.
No Lime or Calcium Carbonate additives (Hince the possible Cobweb Contaminates)

I'm trying to case these bastards tonight or tomorrow after a 12-24 hour dunking.

Please someone shine a little light on an Apprentice over filled with mix-match information.

I'm trying to do things right this time with no foul-ups.
I plan to Birth 4 of the cakes whole with a Regular Dunk/Roll/FC.

And the other 4 cakes with the Casing 101 Tek.
http://www.shroomery.org/50/Casing-101

I appreciate everyones opinions, but obviously someone with experience with the 50/50 casing would be able to give me more substantial information.

Look forward to everyones posts.

Do you recommend the Moistened Vermiculite Bottom Layer?
You may choose only one

What I will tell you is if you would like to you can forget all about all those questions and just go the store and buy this >>

Just pasteurize it and put it on,no other steps involved whatsoever and the mushrooms seem to love the stuff

Or just make a 50/50+ for a third of the cost.

Or you could buy some and not have to worry. Peace of mind is worth something as well.

When i started casings i was very confused as well, lots of different information out there. So I bought some premade 50/50 (jiffy mix) pasturized it and BAM Shroom City. It took most the stress off of the whole casing process, and it gave me a product i could base all my adjustments and results from.

As for the bottom layer of vermiculite, this is new to me too, but what i can tell you, is recently i have tried this, with two casings, and notice no ill affect of not having a bottom layer of vermiculite, so i say don't bother with it. If it poses some kind of risk the rewards aren't great enough to make up for it.

lol i have bought 2 of those bags and they were ph at 6 and 5 which is bad from the start since contams like acidic enviroments. Also saves you money to make your own sure it might take some brain power (not much) but it is the best cheapest way to do it i dunno i guess i like to save money.

No bottom layer! This was used as an absorbent when over watered somehow over the years the newbies or whoever tried to make this a tek, BAD IDEA! It is not needed and can invite contams in some cases.
Mix casing dry BUT MOISTEN BEFORE pasteurizing as wet heat is much more effective than dry heat.
I like mixing my own casings it's more rewarding for me and I have better control in the long run. GL bro Also read my pinning strategy if you haven't already it makes a nice addition to any casing tek.

Alright hopefully I have this correctly now.

  • Mix the Peat-Verm-Calcium Carbonate thoroughly while DRY.
  • Moisten the premixed 3 part casing mixture before pasteurizing.
  • Pasteurize @ 350 for 35 minutes.

I think I can handle that.

Heck I'll give that stuff a whirl as well. And I'll do a little comparison "Control and Experimental Group" using the 50/50 and the self-buffered MGMC Casing as well.

Thank you for Everyone's input.
Later tonight I'll case away and update everyone with pictures in a week or so.

Have a wonderful Tuesday.

So you just put colonized Susbtrate at the bottom of the casing and put a casing layer on top? someone should refurbish the casings teks as I have seen this bottom layer in a few of them....

GL with your experiments!

Either way, the effort is the same. As long as the little ones are safe, no mesure is to be overlooked. No bottom layer it is then....
